As with most Catholics my age, 67, we were discouraged in reading the bible ourselves for fear of what we would make of it on our own. For the last ten years I have been to numerous Bible Study groups. One of them that I go to now usually runs 2 to 3 hrs. Father comes in for the last 1 to 2 hrs. He has introduced us to incites into the Bible and one of them deals with Genesis, and why it was written.
We are told that Genesis was written during the Babylon Captivity, and was written in response to the pagan creation story of a Female god named Tiamat, whom her sons killed.
Genesis then was a teaching story for the people of Israel that stressed that one Deity, God is the Creator of everything. The “story” of Adam (earthling) is just that, a story. I won’t go into the symbolism of the story here. My point then what are we to do about " Original Sin " since the garden and the characters in it are not real, just a story. When asked about original sin we are told that it is the Human Condition. I’m still trying to work through all this.
It seems this is on a higher level of Theology, but recently Father had a homily on Original Sin and he stuck to the standard line of Adam and Eve.
Mark, what have you heard of this?
