I really need to know when it is appropriate for the Eucharist to be removed from the tabernacle. Our parish just held 4 wonderful days of vacation bible school and our pastor told us that we had to remove the Eucharist from the tablernacle during the church sessions. All other sessions were held in the hall. I didn’t see why it was necessary to remove Jesus since we were singing songs about Jesus and reading from the Bible. Thanks

Dear Rhonda,

If the church where the Blessed Sacrament resides is being used as a classroom, then it is most appropriate for the Blessed Sacrament to be removed. It is a sadness that we have come so far that the dynamics of the classroom are equated with the attitude of reverence, silence and adoration that is called for by His Eucharistic Presence. This is not surprising, of course, when such reverence is so regularly absent in the way the Liturgy is celebrated in so many Catholic churches these days! The responsibility for this rests squarely with the clergy.
