Christmas tree/lights first opportunity after Dec 25th. Creche up until Candlemas.

6th. The tree starts drying up and becoming a fire hazard soon after now…

Thank you! The liturgical Calendar and alternate names for feast still totally throws me.

I usually take my things down the weekend closest to the Epiphany or right after. This was a tough year for me because I lost my mother just before the holidays. I was her caregiver for 8 years. It was really hard to put up decorations. So I’ve left mine up a little longer than usual. I’ll start taking things down a little at a time this week. I’m giving my mother’s nativity set to my sister as she is coming back to the church and mine has been packed away for years.

Me too! I only know it because I had to look it up to see if the dates were different or the same. I couldn’t tell by how people use the names interchangeably.

I keep mine up until Candlemas. (But at bare minimum, it as always been at least until the Baptism of Jesus)

Reasons:
  1. I don’t put up my decorations until the 3rd Sunday or 4th Sunday of Advent (3rd when short Advent, 4th Sunday when it’s a long Advent). I prefer to focus on Advent during Advent. The only thing I have out before Gaudete Sunday is the Advent Wreath.
  2. I celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas, so the 12 Days of Christmas are like one day to me.
  3. Because I don’t have my tree for most of Dec, I like having it up all of January.
  4. I also have an artificial tree, so I’m not worried about the tree dying.
  • But if I did have a real tree, then I would do everything possible to keep the tree up until Candlemas, but at BARE MINIMUM until The Lord’s Baptism (tree up while priests wear white). If the a real tree didn’t make it to Candlemas, then I would take it down after the Baptism of the Lord, but keep up all the other decorations until Candlemas.
God bless

I have voted Candlemas, although this is cheating slightly as I have no Christmas decorations in my own home. However, in my parents’ home, where I still always spend Christmas, the Christmas decorations go up on the evening of 24 December and are taken down on 2 February. Many people seem to think it is odd to keep Christmas decorations up for a month after Christmas, but don’t see that there’s anything peculiar about putting them up a month before Christmas!

Full Disclosure. My downstairs decorations have been up for two years. My husband turned off the outdoor lights tonight. That’s step one I guess.

None of the above, although the first option would probably the closest. It is normally a few days after that.

We used to try leaving it until Feb 2nd, but we get real trees and by that time, the tree has dropped quite a lot. Also, they collect trees in our area around mid January, so we try to make sure we can put it outside for collection otherwise it’s much more difficult to get rid of.

I agree. In many homes the tree will be up at the beginning of December, and already taken down on the 1st day of January. They won’t even leave it up until the Epiphany, but that’s probably because they are not religious and don’t even understand what the Epiphany is in many cases.

I am in mourning too and did not put up anything except for a small Nativity scene. This kind of backfired as my brain thinks I haven’t celebrated Christmas properly and has landed me into a decoration-making frenzy in preparation for next year.

Normally I would take my things down around Candlemas. Or Ash Wednesday. Or Easter (😳).

Tomorrow. Because today is the Feast of St John the Baptist.
Edit: Epiphany amd Baptism of our Lord coincides in the East. So if I were RC it would be January 13th.
