My husband and I will be celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary this Sunday and I was wondering what the significance of renewing our vows means. I was thinking about asking our Pastor about doing it at one of the Masses on Sunday. Personally, I think it would be very appropriate to stand before God in thanks and praise upon reaching such a milestone and renew our vows once again before our Church Community and family.

I wasn’t sure exactly what the significance of it was in terms of the Sacrament. Can you enlighten me.

Blessed anniversary!

Our diocese is celebrating the jubilee for Weddings (25th, 50th, 60th) this coming Saturday. What you could ask your pastor to do is to have your marriage blessed after the post-Communion prayer, but, before the final blessing. This ritual is in the Book of Blessings. That is what my parents did for their 25th anniversary.

I think it’s more appropriate to do a little private celebration and invite your loved ones rather than ask the Priest to do this during the normal Sunday Mass.

He prefers to do it during Mass. He does at weekday Mass and also at Sunday Masses.

I think I would have agreed with you, before the divorce rate among Catholics grew so high. Seeing a 40-year marriage blessed is far more encouraging and inspiring than seeing a new marriage started. Where inspiration and encouragement can be found, inspiration and encouragement is sorely needed.

The couple who has their marriage blessed in thanksgiving before the entire parish does their parish a favor.

Beautifully Stated. Thank You So Much! We Will Renew Our Vows On Sunday.

Congratulations on your anniversary! When my grandparents celebrated their 50th, they had a blessing at the end of one of the Masses in their parish. Most of the kids and grandkids were there able to be there. It was really nice. I think it was a Saturday evening Mass, and we all went from the Church to their anniversary party.

My dad and step mother did this last year for their 30th. Theirs was after Mass however, with only family and friends present. It was quick, only about 5 minutes actually, and their original witnesses were there with them as well which was a nice touch. Then we went back to their house for a fantastic catered party and about 50 people. It was a nice day.

My old pastor would always give people celebrating Jubilee anniversaries a blessed image of the Two Hearts, a bottle of wine, and a link of kielbasa (did I mention the population of the parish is mostly Polish? 😉 ).

My husband has a different perspective on the renewal of vows. The truth is, that if you are in a sacramental marriage, the renewal is redundant. I understand where he’s coming from, but I sure like to see those couples who stick together thru thick & thin held up as examples to us all. 🙂

Your Pastor must have been a blessing in himself. What a nice thing to do.

I am a bit emotional when I think after 40 years with this wonderful man I married that I can stand before God in thanks for all the blessings he has given us and take these vows again knowing he will continue to bless us for better or worse, in sickness and health throughout the remainder of our days together. I get chills just thinking about it. What an awesome GOD!!!

Renewal of marriage vows is both beautiful and commendable. Don’t we have a renewal of Baptismal vows as part of the Holy Week liturgy?

Yes, at the Easter Vigil – or was that a rhetorical question?

Actually, it also happens on Easter Sunday, I believe. Furthermore, during the Chrism Mass, the priests renew their commitment to their presbyterial ministry.

Actually the USCCB have put out a “request” for the sacraments to be celebrated during the mass more and integrated. I personally don’t like it. We had an actual wedding celebrated in one of our masses. It was awkward to me. But I guess it’s a way to have a huge wedding without having to pay for the reception.😃

I don’t know how long “renewal of marriage vows” has taken place. I don’t remember it done until recently. However, I can see why the Bishops may be encouraging it or allowing it considering the number of divorces. In my opinion, Catholics make us Christians look bad. Meaning that there are far to many “cultural Catholics” that get the sacraments like their shopping to impress or just go through the motions. The Holy father recently said something about the scandalous number of annulments for the reasons being allowed. It’s so wrong.

CONGRATULATIONS! I’m thrilled to see long term marriages. It speaks mounds about your commitment towards each other. I think that a long marriage is like a sign of God’s enormous commitment to us. I’m working on 20 years myself, but long to be at least as long as my in-laws 55 before my FIL passed on.

I don’t know, if one of the couple is very involved with the parish I think the entire parish would be happy to be there to witness their marriage. Just as I’m always happy to witness the baptisms during Mass, doubly so if it’s a child we are likely to see grow up in church.

A wedding at Sunday Mass though means no Nuptial Mass and it can work as long as the couple realizes that this is not all about them but rather the parish’s Sunday worship in which their wedding is inserted. In that case the couple should be greeted at the back of the church and participate in the procession side by side.

It’s included in the Ritual that’s been around since the 70s. Mom & Dad renewed theirs in 1977 at Mass on their 25th anniversary. A couple who wished to do so in my parish recently, did it after the Homily at the anticipated Sunday Mass.

I think that there is now a growing movement to move these to after the Post-Communion prayer, but, before the final blessing. The reason that I say this is that since this is not the imparting of a sacrament, it is similar to the blessing for the young person celebrating their 15th birthday (Mexican-American culture).

The USCCB had received numerous complaints from members of the faithful who were Mexican-American that priests throughout the country did not want to allow the special blessing for a young person celebrating a 15th birthday (it is usually a young woman, but, young men are now requesting it). There is a precedent in the approved books used by the Mexican Episcopal Conference, something that South Texas has been using for years. What the USCCB was to take what the MEC had done; however, instead of placing the blessing after the homily (as though it were a sacrament like marriage), the blessing was transferred to after the Post-Communion prayer, but, before the final blessing. The USCCB received recognitio from the Holy See and has released the document for use in the United States.

That is why I suspect that this might also be the case with wedding anniversaries since these are not sacraments.

What I have seen occurs after mass. My wife wants to do something like this. Why is it the women that want this? To show the world what they put up with?🤷 ME:D

Not all women want this. I figure I spoke those once and that was sufficient.
