Journey of the Mind Into God
Bonaventure’s approach to the subject of prayer is rather interesting. For him, everything begins with Francis. Everything that he writes on the spiritual life comes from his medications on the life of Francis.
From Francis we learn the nature of God, the nature of man, how to enter into communion with God and man, how to live in communion with the Church, how to read the scriptures and how to use them in daily life, how the scriptures come alive in the Christian. There is no need for any other teacher than Francis As Francis is the mirror of perfection, one need not go far to see Christ. We can see Christ through Francis and we can learn to live in Christ by observing Francis.
He spent the last 16 years of his life meditating on Francis, writing on Francis and preaching on Francis . Every single sermon of the last year of his life was about Francis and the life of faith.
Bonaventure made such good use of Francis that when he became bishop, every priest in his diocese had to study Francis, more than just biographical facts about him, but his entire journey into God. Every priest had to look at Christ through the eyes of Francis and preach it that way to the faithful. If not, you were out of his diocese. He pulled no punches on this. When he became Cardinal, he influenced the Roman Curia, to this day, to make a lot of use of Francis and Franciscan spirituality. It comes through in many little bits at the curia.
Just an example, when Francis composed the first set of stations of the cross, his wording was guided by Augustine. This past Good Friday, the Holy Father insisted that Aquinas not be used as the resource for the Stations of the Cross. Instead, he asked a team of Augustinian sisters to compose them. Our Holy Father is very connected to Bonaventure and Augustine. Studying his life, I think that his passion for Augustine is awakened by Bonaventure. He studied Bonaventure first and received a theology degree on him, then went on for his doctorate on Augustine.
It certainly cured me of stereotypical thinking. I never imagined a German theologian passionate about the approach that Augustine and Bonaventure take to theology, since Aquinas is cold hard logic and the other two begin with the heart. I used to think that a German theologian would prefer the cold hard logical approach. Goes to show ya’ that stereotypes don’t work.
This had been an uphill battle that Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits have been fighting with the Church for hundreds of years. To be honest, the battle has not been with the Holy See. It has always been with individuals, especially the Spanish and the Portuguese. Many of those who led exploration and conquests were ruthless in their attempt to Latinize the world. These three orders never had problems standing up to them in defense of the indigenous people and their cultures.
Many have claimed that Asia, India and much of the Amazon is not Christian because of the intervention of the Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits. My answer to such allegations is that God works on his timetable not mine.
