Reparation for Sacrilege in Church

In our province, I heard that the tabernacle, the altar table and an image of the Holy Child was attacked by a man who is depressed with numerous problems. I heard that the parish is making reparation for the incident.

I’ve also heard of instances in other places wherein they hold processions and the Stations of the Cross for reparation. In some places, I heard they even close the church.

Do you know of traditional methods of making reparation for sacrilege especially those committed within the church or against the Blessed Sacrament?

I can see that holding some event in reparation would make the parisjioners feel better, but, in reality, if the man was mentally ill, did he commit sacrilege? In other words, was he accountable for his actions,? If he wasn’t, then he didn’t commit sacrilege.
