Repentance and Forgiveness

I do not agree with the premise, however, that a truly repentant soul cannot be forgiven. God’s mercy is infinite.
That is key though. Repentance is itself a grace, which must be freely cooperated with. God does not owe any particular grace to us; grace is a free gift, and not based on personal merit. Saying that God will always pardon the repentant sinner is not the same thing as saying that God will always grant the grace required to make an act of repentance. This is exactly how Fr. Ripperger explained it as well. (not verbatim; I paraphrased)

There is, frankly, no way of knowing how God will choose what graces, and in what amount, he will grant to us. To presume anything, is, well, presumption.

None of this contradicts anything about God being all-merciful. I’ve heard it said that God even exercises a type of mercy towards the damned, in that he often limits the amount of evil he allows them to commit, often by a sudden death, thereby decreasing their eternal punishment. (Keep in mind He has full knowledge of which souls will, or will not, repent at the end). In that vein, each rejected grace does additional harm to a soul, putting it in a worse case than if the grace had never been offered. Therefore, it may be the case for some, that they are ultimately better off not being offered particular graces of repentance, simply because their eternal punishment will be less than it otherwise would be. Therefore, for that particular soul, not being granted that grace is an act of mercy. Of course, God alone has the wisdom to discern the particulars of any of this for any individual person.

I clicked on the link, which leads to an online ebook, but had trouble finding the particular quote and its context. Which page is it on?

Interesting… I’ve been listening to a fair bit of his content and been puzzled by some of what I’ve come across. Are you able to elaborate on your comment? Thanks 🙂

The link takes you to the page with the quote. Paragraphs 5 and 6. OP does not quote it verbatim, the quote is taken from parts of the two different paragraphs.
