Repentance is supposed to be a fresh new start. In the physical world, everything you do continues to follow you? Sure you may be forgiven, but you carry your guilt, past transgressions, etc forever?

Peace and all Good to you Pelagia!

Thank you for posting these thoughts & questions, they are certainly very important topics.

guilt is a very slippery and tricky thing. Satan, and the human mind can both cling on to guild & past transgressions and try to stop us getting past them. It often takes time & patience to move on and everyone heals at their own pace & in different ways. Try not to rush yourselff in the healing process. just keep turning to God for forgiveness, reminding yourself of His Mercy & that anything absolved in the Sacrament of Confession has been forgiven.

In terms of offences we may have committed against other people, apologising & trying, as far as is possible & appropriate can often help to move past guilt & past transgressions. Praying for yourself and those you’ve wronged & those who have wronged you helps a lot in my experience as well.

If necessary & appropriate , confronting those who have wronged you about their behaviour & discussing your actions & theirs can help too.

Hope this helps.

you’re in my prayers

God Bless.

Maybe, but the sacrament of reconciliation is quite powerful in releasing the chains of guilt.

Sonny has already given a wonderful answer - but I would just like to add one thought. Guilt can be a positive thing. Our memories, our guilt, our internal embarrassment at remembering our past (and forgiven) transgressions can be a powerful deterrent to our doing such things again.
Think of it like this. A child knows not to touch a hot stove because they did so once and it hurt. avoiding sin can be much this same idea.

Peace
James

All your guilt and sins are wiped away in the Sacrament of Confession when your confession is valid and well made. All that remains for the penitent after a valid confession well made is temporal punishment due to his sins. Some of his temporal punishment gets remitted with the penance carried out after his confession. The rest of the temporal punishment gets remitted by acts of charity and penance, or by the purifying flames of purgatory. God bless you.
