I am trying to find out whether or not the catholic church subscribes to the theology that we catholics have replaced the Jew spritually - that we are, in reality, the real Jews now. I am told that we do believe this, but it was an anti-catholic that told me.

I don’t know if the Church expresses it in that language, but this is essentially the heart of Christian theology.

We believe that the Covenant which God began with the Jewish people was fulfilled and completed in Christ Jesus. Therefore, the Christian Church is what God set out to create when he first spoke to Abraham. The Jewish people where chosen to bring this Church into the world (that’s why they were the “chosen people” - they were chosen for a task, which they fulfilled. The term ‘chosen’ does not mean ‘favorite’ or ‘preferred’).

If all of the Jews had realized that Jesus was their messiah and accepted him, the Jewish Church would have simply become the Christian Church. It would be no different than when the Jews accepted the Covenant of Moses.

The only reason there is a Jewish Church today is because some Jews rejected their own Messiah. Jesus still calls to these Jews today to accept him.

thank you very much I feel more enlightened about it now - what you said seems so clear…, all love in Jesus, the Pope Maker. Hal

The only place I have heard this theory used is in relation to Islam and the Quran. Basically, they used when there is a conflict between Suras (I think that is the term) that contradict each other. Basically, it allows for God to replace one teaching with another.

I believe that the Catholic Church does not subscribe to (in fact has outright rejected) this and it is contradictory to Catholic teaching.

Replacement theology is a serious heresy that has crept into the church.
God made and everlasting covenant with Abraham. Some folks think God goes back on His word.

What is the name of this heresy: We need to know. This has been bothering us for a long time and certain friends and nieghbors are being ripped off by these “born agains”. Thank you, Hal and Judy Barton [hdbarton] ps, what about the curses against the jews which do not seem to have been exicuted yet. Does that mean those curses will fall on Christians who are the new and real Jews?

I need help with this, too!

Would it be right to say that we are the New Israel? And aren’t we accused of Replacement Theology when we’re just following Christ, who fulfilled the Covenant?

The argument that I’m hearing (from some not-too-nice Messianic Jews) is that the Catholic Church believes that we (the Church) have REPLACED the Jews as the chosen people. And I’m understanding that we haven’t replaced them, inasmuch as we’ve recognized Christ as the fulfillment. In other words, we believe and we’ve accepted Christ’s Mission to spread the Good News throughout the whole world – which is what the Jews were supposed to do in the first place (and which many of them have done and are still doing, by virtue of their baptism and acceptance of Jesus as Messiah).

So we ARE Jews (grafted in) – we’re not replacing them, we’ve joined them. Or at least the “them” who are believers.

Have I got this right? Please, will someone verify this and make whatever corrections to my understanding that I need? This whole Replacement Theology stuff is very difficult to understand for me. It has so much to do with what’s going on in the Middle East and with those who are primed to rebuild the Temple and who are fighting over land. I think it has at its root a complete misunderstanding of the Promised Land (Heaven, not physical geography, right?).

Thanks in advance,

SouthernSister

We are the continuation of the Jews as they should be, followers of the Messiah. Christ made a covenant with Abraham for the purpose of bringing the Messiah for our salvation. The Messiah came and our salvation came with Him. The Jews were supposed to accept Him. Some did, but many did not. Current Judaism is the result of those who did not accept the Messiah. Christianity is the continuation of Judaism fullfilled by Christ. We do not replace them, we continue the Jewish tradition.

This I think is a very good response and is in keeping with the teachings of the Early Church Fathers and the documents of the Church.

I too have been charged with believing replacement theology which is a degrogoratry term in their thinking.

I simply turn to Romans 11 which shows that we have been grafted into spiritual isreal.

17If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

22Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
25I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27And this is[f] my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”[g]
28As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. 30Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[h] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.
