How should we respond to the argument that unwanted
pregnancy shorten a woman’s life. brings them to financial ruin
and is emotionally and physically devastating.

Is there a way to find a statistical study to Dispute this?🙂

I think the position sort of misses the point really. The point is that you have to take responsibility when you have marital relations. Catholic teaching does not mean you have to keep having children.

Even if it did mean that, is killing an innocent child really the right way to deal with such an issue?

Not that I know of; but you could try pointing out that none of those consequences are inevitable - many women who didn’t want their babies at first wind up being glad it happened.

And paradoxically, sometimes a WANTED pregnancy will do all those things too. No one knows what the future will bring.

You could make the same case for elderly parents… Or teenagers, or kids at any age in life for that matter. How about a child that gets into a accident and has irreversible brain trauma? A cancer patient with endless medical bills? All of these are mentally and physically devastating, cause financial hardship and potentially can shorten a woman’s life.

The main point of the argument presented is not the three potential risks of pregnancy but the word unwanted. Life has been deemed valuable only if it is wanted. That is tragic. 😦

God bless

I think the big issue here is characterizing certain pregnancies as unwanted. Provided you can get a pro-choicer to acknowledge that an abortion is the same thing as killing a child, the argument becomes this:
  • The real inherent value of an unborn child that is “wanted” (“allowed” to be born) is the same as the inherent value of a child that is “unwanted” (killed by an abortion). The inherent value, in both cases, is directly the result of God’s love for the child. This is an objective standard because it is decided by someone other than a human being. You can use Jeremiah 1:5 to reinforce the point from Scripture.
  • If it becomes acceptable to declare certain children “unwanted”, this indicates that the child loses value in the eyes of the parent because it is not wanted. In other words, the metric for measuring worth of a person just switched from an objective standard (God’s love) to a subjective opinion (whether a child is deemed “wanted” or not).
  • If the metric for measuring worth of a child switches from the objective standard to a subjective opinion, every single person becomes open to not having value based on someone else’s opinion at any point in time. The natural progression of this is that whoever is in charge and what their opinion is ultimately will determine the worth of a person instead of God’s love. Switching this value metric devalues ALL life because anyone can be devalued at any time. It may start with unborn children, but it certainly won’t end there…

Sorry, I didn’t see your post up before I posted. I’m glad we agree though.

Let’s get real here. The child has no worth, only the choice of the mother to abort has worth in this scenario.

We can argue that the mother’s life can be shortened by the abortion. She can die from the procedure, especially in abortion mills that only care about the per ca pita count, money, money, money, that’s their bottom line. And physical damage can and has been done in these procedures.

An abortion can bring about financial ruin to the mother just as well. It fosters a lifestyle of decadence and usury.

And as we well know, abortion regret is emotionally devastating.

In a society where the act of sex has little worth, the product thereof has no worth.

We need to pray and pray ceaselessly for the whole of society, especially the pre-born.

Quite the opposite has been shown.
Women who have had abortions versus women who have carried their child to term have a higher rate of suicide, alcoholism and drug abuse.
This page has links to some studies.

And, as others have said, that’s not the point anyway. The taking of a human life to improve your own condition is still murder.
