When the unmarked passage came into the church, they thought it may have been a bomb because it had no return address. So the police emergency services unit came. But when they opened the package, they found the statue of the infant Jesus, that had been stolen long before. We are not told if there was a record of the theft–but the note with the statue said it had been stolen long ago,

They do not know who mailed the statue of Jesus nor who had stolen it.

Now it is back in the church’s nativity scene, kept in the box in which it arrived, where worshippers coming into the church on Christmas eve could see it.

I’m guessing Granddad stole it, gifted it to daughter, and daughter now being deceased, her heirs decided to do the right thing and send Jesus back where he belongs.

Good story though. The church can feel happy that Baby Jesus at least was in a home where he was obviously cared for and loved.

I’m glad the bomb squad didn’t blow up Baby Jesus.

Well, the sad part is that someone in that family knew where it came from long before it was brought back. And didn’t bring it back until now. How could anyone have enjoyed the presence of a stolen Baby Jesus for all those years?

It’s the type of thing that you can totally picture in an Irish or Italian Catholic family. “That time your Great-Uncle Dennis had a few drinks and decided to “borrow” the Baby Jesus from Our Lady of Grace nativity scene.”

Oh my gosh yes! You have to write it now!

Sounds like a Prairie Home Companion type story too.

Then there is the story of the mom who found the church´s Christmas crib baby Jesus in her young child´s pocket. When confronting the young child, he replied “Mommy, we can’t leave baby Jesus in the church all night. He is a baby!” 🤣

Or a poor lonely couple who had no one to spend Christmas with, as they left midnight Mass they stopped to greet the Baby Jesus…and…

I’m shocked that anyone would dare steal a statue from a church 87 years ago. Today? Yes. Back then 😱
