WOW,
China officials do not know what they are doing. But are we doing all we can to help the priests/seminarians in need? I feel we can do more for them than just donate money. It is a prayer ethic, more of a sudel approach. Maybe if we all dedicate Tuesday’s decade to those suffering from reigious presecution.

I ask for the intercession of the Blessed Mother, and her divine son, our Lord.

Tucker I am sure they don’t know what they are doing…if you want the Church to grow, ban it and torture its members…if you want it to flounder make it comfortable.

I recently went to Beijing for a holiday in Autumn, there are 4 major cathedrals North,South,East & West.

The Southern cathedral is the Church of the Immaculate Conception founded by Matteo Ricci. The Bishop`s residence is guarded 24 hours by 2 guards.

I tried to pass a copy of Catholic Encyclopaedia in cd rom & New Testament in mandarin in mp3 format to the local priest,I knew it was illegal uder chinese law as we have to declare it on a custom declaration form on board any flight to China.I left the articles in a confessional & notified the priest ,the priest also seemed to be worried & the cds were left there.

The catholic community seems to be very vibrant despite the climate of fear,I lived in a Muslim country but there was never any climate of fear as I encountered in China.

As American catholics contemplate the jailing of priest & Bishops, taking action through political means , use of media to hate the chinese , threatrening the chinese with trade sanctions will only increase the chinese communist suspicion that christians are only trying to meddle …as they have done in Beijing at the beggining of the 20th century when the foreign army burned down Yee Her garden. The only way in face of suspicion & hatred is through acts of love as our Lord has taught many times.

The Chinese concept of history is similar to Catholic view of history ,many things in the past affect their current view of the world.American Catholics can take a leaf from Matteo Ricci’s attempt by engaging the chinese at a lower level ,living with them & teaching them various sciences ,at the same time try to impart the christian message when we have the oppurtunity.
Beside praying for them that one day they will accept the gospel ,christians can try to enrol in their colleges & universities & engaging them, maybe through teaching of english etc.The Chinese society also face any problems like poverty, inadequate health system & the lack of justice, any Catholic that can provide some solution will garner much goodwill.

If their are communist cadres who read this thread I hope to convey the message that christianity is not out to undermine the society ,it is a way to live life abundantly ,we have no other agenda except to share this messge as required by our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

The communist goverments arrest of Chinese priest & seminarian underlies its insecurity with all forms of religious practises, especially socalled foreign religions.A friend of mine who spoke to a Public Security official about the basis of this fear is that China is a very large & populous country with a very large population who are poor & gullible ,if diffrent groups of missionaries e.g. Catholics,Protestants,Muslims will easily find ready converts especially if a little material benefit is provided, consequently China will be divided by the various beliefs & the country will be destabilised.

During China`s 5000 years history there many periods when the country was not united , the consequence is poverty ,social upheaval & invasion by Mongols,Manchurians & recently by the Japanese. This is probably the source of insecurity & no amount of conjoling ,threats or rethorics will change this basic belief.

American Catholics will not advance Catholicism anywhere in China or even in United States itself if we treat our Protestants brothers & sisters as an enemy & foe with suspicion.I am a second generation catholic convert ,my father was converted in China by French missionaries while he was studying in the Catholic university in Shanghai ,he converted not out of want ,but because he witnessed the humility ,poverty of the learned priests.I humbly believe conversion anywhere in the world depends a lot on holy witnessess to the faith ,for e.g. Father Benedict Groeschel,Mother Anglelica etc…not on politicians no matter how great their stature.
