I don’t know.

1 Kings 11:3 New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSVCE)

3 Among his wives were seven hundred princesses and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.

I kind of agree. I would rather be born into a loving family with a father & multiple “moms”, then a broken unloving home with a single unmarried mom, no father.

Unfortunately I’ve seen many business-like marriages. No love or romance.

I disagree and think it provides a framework for cohesive family units. My research supports my stance.
I missed your citation on any studies supporting your position. Please re-post.

The issue is that the government in recognizing same-sex couples cohabiting as marriage will force every citizen, house of worship, and business to do so the same.

At issue is whether government recognition will eventually lead to government coercion that compels others to recognize and affirm same-sex relationships as marriages. All have the freedom to live as they choose, but they do not have the right to redefine marriage for everyone else.

I guess in short I keep seeing the argument made that the man/woman marriage is good because it allows biological children to be created …
A man-woman relationship is the only way a child can be created.

The concern is not so much that a handful of gay or lesbian couples would be raising children, but that it would be very difficult for the law to send a message that fathers matter when it has redefined marriage to make fathers optional .

Man-woman marriages also provide kinship structures across generations. Elderly parents are cared for by their adult children and grandparents help to care for their grandchildren. This extended family support is less likely and full of complications in fragmented step-families. Same-sex marriages will only make such extended care less likely.

I thought that Islam allows polygamy.
It does, but the practice is discouraged: The Exalted says: ‘But if you feel you many not be able to deal justly between them, then marry only one.’ (Qur’an 4:4).

Dealing justly means that every wife must be treated the same in respect of the quality of housing, of financial support, and so on. A Muslim wife - no matter how wealthy she may be - is under no obligation to provide financial support to her husband, or to their children. The responsibility is entirely his. This is probably why most married (Muslim) men have only one wife.

Plus if a person wants to live in a sexual relationship with three other people and have his/her minister say they’re all married, s/he can do that right now all day long anywhere and unless one of the people is underage or otherwise vulnerable, the law will likely do nothing. So it’s already de facto decriminalized.
The law is not going to recognize it though.
I should hope not. The law tends to be a good teacher. This is why we need to be very careful about what legislation we pass.

Yes, I believe non-Western Muslims are one of the “other religious groups” I mentioned that practice it. Just as abusive as any other polygamous relationship, from what I understand…

Those guys must be hardcore.

One of their wives will always be on her time of the month, lots of mother-in-laws, a gang of women instead of one telling him off for snoring, working a ton of overtime to buy gifts for them and whichever wife sits in the front seat of the car the others will impale him for favouritism. Ironically he will still have the same lack of sex?

Don’t get upset it’s just a fun reply based on my life if I had multiple wives. 🙂
Let’s just say that your idea of fun isn’t my idea of fun. Do people still make jokes about periods, mothers-in-law, nagging, demanding wives, and sexless marriages? Evidently they do. How sad.

I’m sure if it was about a woman having many husbands there would be loads of jokes about the men.

You think so? Since it wasn’t about a woman having many husbands, I couldn’t possible speculate. And even if people were to joke about a woman having many husbands, would that make it right? Were you not told as a child, “Two wrongs don’t make a right”? There’s no excuse for misogynistic humor. It should have died with Bernard Manning.

Actually people did used to send the police after gay couples. There were sodomy laws on the books.
The police charged them with sodomy, regardless of which sex they were and regardless of whether they or anyone else identified them as “gay couples”. Being a “gay couple” was not an offence.

Unfortunately I’ve seen many marriages based on “love” or romance, which ended in disaster for the couple and their children. A businesslike approach has its benefits.

And many people in the Bible had several wives. For example, did not Solomon have 700 wives and 300 concubines?
You seem to imply that if someone in the Bible did something, then God must approve of it and wants us to do it too. If you actually read the story you will find that his polygamy resulted in a disastrous end for Solomon and his children.

If God did not approve of polygamy, why did He personally give several wives to David?
God gives us free will and permits us to do the wrong thing if we so choose. That doesn’t mean He approves of it.
