Too nice a day to be arguing about whether we’re arguing about the pope
I expressed views about Kim Davis you don’t like, so you want me to say something different. It’s not going to happen, so let’s just stop the back-and-forth and go enjoy the day and forget about each other.

Have a nice day.

Her religious liberty, no. Her duty as an elected official, though, is a different matter. And I think you know that.
So then back before the Civil War, was it also the responsibility of elected officials to defend slavery, even if they disagreed with it?

Many judges in the north refused to enforce the fugitive slave act instead allowing escaped slaves to keep their freedom rather than, as law required, return them to the south . Would those who deride Kim Davis have told these judges to resign rather than disobey the law? The church, as recently affirmed by the Pope, clearly states we do not have to follow unjust laws. I admire this woman for standing up for her faith. I hope if I’m ever faced with a similar situation I will have the courage she does

In either case, this meeting will do so much harm. The Pope’s message about caring for the poor and needy will know be overshadowed by this selfish individual and the ensuing media storm. .
The Pope’s message included more that just care for the poor. Listen to his speech at the White House, he specifically mentioned religious freedom.

He stated that to the US Bishops, specifically complementing them on their hard work for religious freedom.

So, yes, this is certainly PART of the Pope’s message.

If anything, this meeting, and the meeting with the Little Sisters of the Poor, showcase that the Pope’s concept of religious freedom does not necessarily mesh with how others view the concept.
