Today when I heard the Indy Colts’ owner speak about Tony Dungy’s son, he said something to the effect that our prayers are with Tony’s family and we pray for the repose of the son’s soul.

As I listened to that comment, it struck me as a particular Catholic phrase; I have never heard a Protestant use that terminology before - which of course doesn’t mean that they don’t.

So my question is this - is praying for the “repose of one’s soul” a Catholic phraseology?

Merry Christmas!

I’ll offer my opinion and say yes this is a Catholic phrase. In essence, it refers to the belief that the soul of a person who dies in God’s grace must be made pure before entering God’s presence in heaven.

2 Macc 12:46 It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.
