Hope this is a good forum to create this thread.
I would like to keep this light hearted, as it is not a very important subject, but something I am curious to know what others do.
First off, I am sensitive to my surroundings, especially at this time of year. I enjoy beauty and nature, even in popular places that you would not think of when you hear those words, such as amusement parks, local gatherings.
I live in Southern California. I have idea that I would not encounter this personal issue as much if I lived in New York or many places in the east (but then I could not handle very cold weather either).
So, my personal issue is I dislike seeing people wearing clothes with images such as skeletons, bones, freaking looking heads, and such. For some reason, it is popular here for some parents to dress children in hoodies that look like skeletons. Some men wear shirts or jackets with freaking looking heads or logos on the back. But here is my main issue: When I am out enjoying myself and soaking in the pretty decorations, lovely moon in the night sky, and general good feelings including good will towards men, women, and children and I turn and see an image such as I describe I feel let down and suddenly snapped out of my enjoyment.
It has nothing to do with the person and, in fact, I can be effected by some music in the same way. It is more like real life, the less pretty and more annoying bits of it have intruded on my enjoyment. What I end up doing, say if I end up walking behind someone wearing a freaky faced shirt or jacket, is walk away, go back the closest place I feel more comfortable and wait til that person leaves, then walk back. But, this is really inconvenient and also cannot be done if I happen to be with someone (although, I am often out solo which may make me more observant to begin with). So I wondered what other sensitive people do. Just ignore these things that bother you? I wonder if doing something to avoid the feelings actually imprints them on one’s memory more. Something to think about.
I am very sensitive to music, especially with vocals and lyrics are very recognizable to me, whereas I think some people don’t notice them as much. If the lyrics of a song are distasteful to me, it effects my mood a bit. I try to focus on something else.
The biggest problem I have is when I leave a place I enjoy. If there are rude people nearby or someone loud and obnoxious, I can’t leave. I have to wait until there are nicer people around. If absolutely necessary I will leave, but I am disturbed by them and it spoils my time for awhile. I was out the other night at a Christmas event and wanted to head out back to the car, then heard someone yelling at someone. It was very disturbing to me, but I ignored it. In ignoring it, I became rude, although I did keep a smile on my face. I rushed past several people, dodging through a sort of bottleneck towards the exit, simply because I did not want to remain in the area with the yelling.
So, I am basically asking others here who have some sensitive feelings how they handle them. It would be great to hear I am not alone.
