First, to make a long story short: Husband & I raised Catholic, married in church, children were all baptized in church. Then, went away from the Catholic church for about six years. Returned 2 years ago, but did not immediately place our kids in the religious formation classes. Instead, we’ve homeschooled them on Cathechism, and taught them the differences between Catholicism and other denominations. Now, we’d like for them to make their First Reconciliation and Eucharist, but are being told by our parish that they have to have 2 years of being enrolled in their religious ed programs before they can do that. The kids are now 12, 10 and 9, and we’d like for them to be able to celebrate the sacraments as soon as possible. Is there really a requirement like this, before kids can make their communion? I have read a lot of documents on-line (catechism and the like) and find nothing that pertains to this ‘requirement’, only that the child must be of an age of understanding, and that they know the catechism of the church (which my kids do).

Your correct in thinking that the parish policy is not in accord with Church teaching because it is not. I would suggest you bring up this matter directly to the pastor WITH the documentation, official, you said you looked up. Remember to be charitable at all times and have your children demonstrate they understand the significance of the Holy Eucharist.
I also homeschool and had to do this. If the pastor decides to stick with the policy and not Church norms I would strongly suggest you contact your Bishop with the evidence you’ve gathered in support of your claim and, if possible, a written refusal from your priest.
If you need help gathering documentation I will be happy to assist you.
God bless you and your family.

Peace
