I regular give to a number of Catholic organizations but have been reluctant in the past to “pledge” a given amount. This has changed recently. However, one organization has been doing things that, in my opinion, are wrong (I cannot go into it at this time and I do not name organizations) and I am thinking of rescinding the pledge I made to that organization.

Can this be considered a sin since I did pledge this amount?

Mind you, I have other organizations that can use this money and my total level of donations will not go down and my even go up.

If you disagree with the use of the donated money, I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to rescind your pledge. While organizations like pledges to be able to forecast income, it isn’t like you signed a contract. God justs asks us to be good stewards with his money and use it responsibly.

Since it is a Catholic organization though, I would recommend at least letting someone in charge know why you’re electing not to financially support that organization. If the issue is grave enough, it might be worth informing your diocese, too. I’m sure that the Church doesn’t want their effors misrepresented.

Sin? No.

Bad idea? No.

It’s your money and if you don’t want it to go for certain things, that’s your business and nobody elses. I’d just let them know why you are not following through on the pledge, out of courtesy.

Well, I did finally rescind the donation pledge. The money will now go to the Order that runs the Confraternity I belong to.

You pledged to something you thought was A but it turned out to be B.

It is like sinning but not knowing it. No fault, when you realized you stopped.

By any chance it is somewhat pollitical in nature?

Just out of curiosity. Not that it is important.

Not political in nature. Other than voting and complaining about the perversions of Relativism and Liberalism, I stay out of politics. That includes endorsing or working for any candidate for any office (ain’t worth it).

That said, the change has been made and the chapter is closed.

Absolutely not. You can write the organization and be blunt as to why you are rescinding your pledge to them (be specific), or you can call them and tell them directly. Let your conscience be your guide and, remember, the Lord loves a cheerful giver. If something isn’t right, you have the moral fabric to know why and reconsider.
