" Adonnis Taylor saw the Ford Explorer parked near a 7-Eleven on State Street and thought, “Must be the police.”
Far from it. Behind the wheel was a man who, for reasons yet explained, aimed his speeding SUV at a woman and her 20-year-old daughter, hitting them and then circling back and racing at them again on the Near North Side Monday night, according to police.
As the Explorer closed in, Taylor said he was able to pull the daughter to the sidewalk in time but not her mother. “I keep replaying it in my head,” he said. “He ran over her. He dragged her.”
Zoraleigh Ryan, 55, wasn’t breathing when Taylor and the daughter reached her. “I just wish I could have done more.‘’
The driver of the SUV, Edgar Roman, eluded police and ditched the Explorer about a mile from his home in Albany Park, according to prosecutors. Then he went to a police station and claimed he was carjacked at gunpoint and the SUV was stolen.
Prosecutors offer no motive for SUV driver accused of striking woman and her daughter, then circling back and hitting mother again, killing her »
But Taylor had snapped photos of the SUV and the license plate. Roman, 25, eventually admitted hitting the women and was charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, according to prosecutors. They gave no motive for the attack."
At least the man tried to help.
