Resource for Lectionary Readings

Hello,

I am looking for a resource for Lectionary readings. I know there are resources that will tell you what readings are done on a particular day. This is NOT what I am looking for. I am looking for a resource that will allow me to look up specific Bible verses and tell me on what day they will be read.

Usually the parish bulletin will post the scriptural references to the readings next to the given day. If your parish bulletin does not have the information, try the EWTN website. They are pretty good about posting the information.

if you look in the back of any lectionary, or of many editions of the NAB there is a list of readings for each Sunday cycle (3 yr) and each weekday cycle. since they go more or less in order it should tell you when (or if) the passage you are looking for is being read. also many of the published resources that reprint the readings, with commentary or teaching, such as for RCIA or training lectors (from ltp.org for instance) will also have such a list in the index.

if you are interested in a link to CCC topics and lectionary readings, Opening the Scripture from Our Sunday Visitor is the handbook you want.

Thanks, but that is not what I am looking for. I am looking for “I have the reading(s) - what day will they be read at Mass”.

Thanks, but still not exactly what I am looking for. While it is true that the Gospels are more or less in sequential order (though not always, nor consistently), the other Readings jump all over the place and many times are tried to compliment the Gospel Reading. And I have yet to see any sort of pattern for the Psalms used.

Like I said, I am looking for “I have the reading(s), when will they be read at Mass”.

In the back of the lectionary there is a listing of scripture and where in the lectionary cycles they are read. Perhaps if you know someone with a lectionary you can copy those .

I took the USCCB Liturgical Calendar usccb.org/liturgy/current/2008cal.pdf

and marked the days in my study Bible. It will take you three years (and some solemnities will still be missing, I keep updating). I think it is good for analysis, particularly for feast days, relating the message of the feast/solemnity to the text of the reading. Also seeing what readings are used for multiple days is helpful for understanding the scripture.

They have the Gospel of John done - only 71 more books to go.

Also, if they had lists for the readings in the LOTH, too - but that might be asking too much.

In the back of the LOTH book there is a listing of all readings and the page where to find them. Also as I stated before, the Lectionary has a list of all scripture passages that are in the Lectionary and where to find them in the Lectionary.

I decided to take the DIY (do it yourself) approach to this one:

I pencil in the margin of my RSV “Epiphany 1,” “Easter 2,” etc, as the weeks go by. Now I know when I read something in my RSV when it was or will be read in the cycle.

It takes a year, but the familiarity of it is very nice.

Of course, since I’m interested in the old, one year lectionary (1962 missal), my life might be simpler than yours.

I’m sorry that you never found the answer you’re looking for. I’ve been looking for much the same thing.

There are so many Bibles and reference books, I’m sure it exists, esp in a hard copy, but I can’t find anything like this electronically (is there any other way?)

So often, the books will site where the passage is referenced elsewhere in the Bible, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to say ‘The Beatitudes’, or “Matthew 5” and see that it comes up in Cycle D (since I know there is no Cycle D), 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, or Cycle E, Tuesday after Pentecost, or something.

I have been trying to make note of when the readings come up, but I lose things so I have started this more than once.

Maybe if we keep asking, some tech-savvy person will come up with such a tool so that people with Bibles on their smartphones or on their desktop can do a quick reference from what they are reading, to when it’s read in the liturgy!

You won’t find anything like this for all 72 books of the Bible because not every book is included in the cycle of readings. If I recall correctly, 2 Chronicles and Obadiah aren’t used at all in either the Sunday or weekday cycles. There may be other books, too.

The copyright issue would seem to involve the actual scriptural texts. I suspect the OP and others would be satisfied with simply a cross-reference of days and verses, and could look up the verses on their own in the translations of their choice.

Does the Congregation for Divine Worship retain a copyright on the verses selected for the weekday lectionary, perhaps through Typis Polyglottis Vaticanis? I couldn’t find a definitive answer to this, but the lectionaries I examined online only cite copyrights by CCD and ICEL. Even if so, it would surprise me if the Vatican objected to anyone assembling such a cross-reference for educational or devotional purposes, unless he were trying to profit from it.
