There are a few autism groups, but none of them seem particularly active at the moment, so I thought I’d start a thread.

Does anyone know of any resources for dealing with autism? I’m looking for pretty much every angle (schooling vs. homeschooling, activities to do at home, etc.) via any medium (websites, books, support networks, etc.).

If there is anything specifically Catholic, Iam particularly interested in that as well.

Thanks!

We are struggling with the same problem - basically inactive autism groups and an utter lack of Catholic autism groups. I wonder if Catholic Answers would allow us to start a group here?

I think there are a couple of groups started, but it seems like it’s been a while since anyone has utilized them.

Thanks for posting. I was taking the silence as an answer that there was not much out there. Perhaps that will change in the coming years. I’ve heard that autism is becoming more and more common.

Either more common or more commonly diagnosed? I wonder about that!

Early intervention with speech therapist/ occupational therapist are very key. They have many books or dvd that you can get to educate yourself and to have tips to help your child. Check your local library.

These children are very sensitive with food coloring, chemical, heavy water and even some with dairy/gluten.

You are the voice of your child, and you will have to take courage and stand your ground for him/her regarding food.

There the DAN doctors that you can research, they have a lot of information.

Many children diagnose austism, don’t necessary have autism but heavy metal poisoning (From food or mother direction when she was pregnant). Check the level of Vitamin A and B of your child. Promote fresh fruits/vegetables as much as possible.

I pray for you!

Thanks. A lot has happened since I started the thread. My wife is getting trained and is working with him using the Applied Behavioral Approach. Everyone I’ve talked to says that this is (so far) the only approach that has been proven via studies to be effective.

Our son doesn’t have a lot of the dietary/tactile sensitivities. Nor many of the more concerning behavioral issues (self-harm, prolonged tantrums, etc.).
