I have an 18 year old employee who has an interest in the study of Hebrew in relation to the Scriptures and the culture of Jesus’ day. I’d like to get him a book as a Christmas present. Anyone have any ideas.

Can’t be too heavy as he is still young,

Haha, I don’t know about a book…but there’s this great website called “Hebrew for Christians” which greatly introduces Hebrew to the novice and even teaches one Hebrew, up to the basic level. The best part is that it’s completely free. 👍

But, I think that you’ll find this page, of books and other study materials, from this website helpful for your cause.

Wow. There’s a few books there! I think that’ll do,
Thank you very much.

Over the summer I read two useful books by Joel Hoffman, one on the history of the Hebrew language and the other on translation and some of the disputed passages in the Hebrew Bible. I’d recommend the latter: And God Said. It sometimes disputes the way Christians have read certain passages, but it’s a good overview of how scholars read the text and attempt to determine what words mean.
