My husband’s 90yo grandmother recently have me a book and asked me to read it. It is Osho’s Mustard Seed. Red flags immediately went up when I read it was reflections on the 5th Gospel of St. Thomas. None of the quotes of Jesus in the book had references to the Bible. A lot of the teachings were anti-Catholic and seemed to encourage holiness through yourself rather than reliance on God and His grace. I did some Internet searching on him and found several references to the occult and his past.

She is Vietnamese and very spiritual. Her book has a lot of writing in it and she has clearly reflected on this for years. It is misleading because it looks like it helps you become holier, but it actually draws one away from the Church and its teachings. She has no idea that she is spiritually hurting herself with these teachings. I tried to explain to her when she asked what I thought, but there is too much of a language barrier for her to understand.

Can you help guide me to written explanations of why this book is bad? If I print and give to her with a letter from me, she will study it to understand. I have also already purchased a Catholic daily devotional with reflections and other articles for her. I would also welcome any suggestions for reading for an elderly adult seeking to grow in faith.

Thank you in advance!

It sounds like Gnosticism. Such writings are not in the canon approved by the Church. It is easy to be led astray when we disobey what the legitimate authority of the Church approves for us.

It needs refuting and I hope someone here can give you a detailed answer. Prayers are needed to help as well.
