Respect for the Word.

I’ve seen many Bibles handed to people who aren’t even interested, just trying to make their way to class. After receiving one, they immediately throw it in the trash. I might have even done this in my naive/foolish/irresponsible phase. Worse, there are people who desecrate the holy Word of God that was given to them. They’ll throw it on the ground or burn it. There was this one time an official group of students on my school campus that gave away porn for Bibles, and it was successful for them. Protestants on one street corner handing out Psalms like provisions in a third world country, and this horrible group trading out porn for the Word of God.

So my question is why do protestants, who have so much respect for sacred scripture hand it out in the form of Bibles, Psalms, and New Testament to just about anyone that walks by on a college campus? Don’t get me wrong. I really do believe that you respect sacred scripture, and I don’t think you have ill intentions. I just don’t think it’s wise to do the action I’ve described. If Catholics do this anywhere, the question would apply to those Catholics as well. I’ve just only seen it with protestants.

Probably because they feel that if just one soul came to Christ through this practice it would be worth it.

IDK though, as I have never handed Bibles out on the street. Good question though.

If financial constrain is not the factor, then why not?

There is this project about distributing the Bibles in China. I know of a Catholic who is going around raising fund for this purpose. The last I heard he has accumulated more than two million dollars. It is quite tricky to bring the Bibles to China but if you can do it and find a way to do it, then why not?

Of course distributing the Bibles must also be accompanied with prayers and intention. It helps if discernment is applied properly but in reality it is not always practical. Never did this myself but I salute those who do.

Well, the Holy Eucharist is certainly the most sacred thing we have. But Jesus was being very general there. And obviously “pearls” cannot refer to the Eucharist; it refers to the “hidden treasures” that God gives to us…

It’s interesting the Eucharist is brought up. Just as much respect the Body, Soul, and Divinity receives, so should the Word in the printed form of the Bible. I cannot tolerate seeing people desecrate any form of Sacred Scripture. Definitely there should be more care in distributing Bibles. This leads me to think that there are better ways to evangelise than handing out Bibles to just about any stranger, but I will not digress.
