For me on this day in light of the passing of the prophet, seer, and revelator and President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Thomas S Monson, this man would sit in the Cathedral of Catholicism in Salt Lake City, respecting what Catholics believe and in other churches, respecting what those believed recognizing that his beliefs differed from his. He gave everyone respect whether one was religious or not.

It is sad to me, in light of how this man lived his life in action and words, the LDS church is disrespected as usual here on the forums. If Pope Francis had passed away, I would be respectful of his passing and not do what I am reading here about views that are not LDS, nonetheless some believe such nonsense.

You know what? I saw some of the responses to his death, and for once I agree with you.

I thought he sounded like a good man and I posted the prayer for the dead that I always say when I hear of a death.

My Irish Catholic mother taught me to never speak ill of the dead.

I am sorry that some of my fellow Catholics were uncharitable.

Catholics are taught to respect others regardless of their beliefs.

Please do not be too upset over the minority of people whose views do not represent those of the Church.

There are loony fundamentalists in every group, Catholicism and Mormonism alike.

I’m not Catholic, but just remember, now that Thomas Monson has passed, the torch will now be passed on to the next “prophet, seer and revelator” (Russell M. Nelson) who will continue to teach that the Catholic Church is the Church of the Devil, that you are the whore of the earth, that your professors are all evil, who teach the doctrines of man and not of God, and that you worship with your lips only.

Because this thread is about Mormonism which I happen to know a lot about from personal tragic experiences.

I’m not Catholic because I haven’t been baptized yet. My plan is to become Catholic unless they choose to not let me join with you. On the other hand, being an ex-Mormon, I’m very passionate about telling the truth about Mormonism to everyone I know. If my presence here is not welcome, I’m truly fine with that. I don’t need to please everyone. I will just be who I am. I will tell what I know about Mormonism, here or wherever I go. But I won’t promise to not say negative things about the Mormon Church here because I know I would not keep such a promise. Shall I leave?

OK, if you’re planning to become Catholic, and are former Mormon, it makes more sense.

Still, please show some charity and some good manners on the forum. You are free to think/ do what you like in private as that’s between you and God, and I did see that you deleted a number of your posts in the obituary thread, but discussions of a religion really belong in one of the threads like “Let’s talk about Mormonism”, not on the thread of a guy from that religion who just died. Posts like that get attributed to all Catholics in general and give a bad impression of the faith you are anxious to join.

I would say the same thing if it was Islam, Scientology, or anything else. I don’t have a particular love for all these other religions, and there are a couple of religions I am extremely negative about for my own reasons, but I respect and pray for all dead people.

I will respect any religious belief that does not disrespect any other religious belief.

When I bought my first computer back in the mid 1990’s and first logged on, they included a little booklet about “netiquette”. I think a lot of people may have missed this, and I’ve got to agree there is really little point in being rude.

Now if people want to disagree or dispute LDS teachings, there isn’t a problem, but attacking a deceased leader doesn’t show much class.

I will respect any religious believer who does not disrespect any other religious believer. But there are a few religious beliefs I simply cannot respect.

Who is to say you’re not doing the same thing to Catholics in ten years. Leave graciously. Forgiveness will take you much further toward Christ. I have serious reservations about Mormons but I can’t say that one has done harm to me in any way ‘in real life.’ Quite the contrary. Regardless of what they thought about my faith or said about it behind my back.

I left graciously but they won’t leave me alone. It’s impossible for them. I get emails, snail mails and phone calls all the time from Mormons wanting to save me. One of them on this forum can’t stand that my life is happier since leaving Mormonism and he messages me often. They don’t know the meaning of allowing people to leave. Graciously or otherwise. And if calling them out on their lies and hypocrisy is wrong, then I’ll deal with that in the judgment but I’m not going to remain quiet so long as any of my children or other loved ones are in the clutches of Mormonism.

You expressed the very reason I gave a PO box rather than my street address when I ordered a new copy of the BoM (which has only changed slightly from the one I had in the 80s) and their version of the KJV. I don’t want them coming around.

If you don’t want to be contacted, why didn’t you just buy a copy of the Book of Mormon on Amazon?

Its a cheap book, easily available at a low price. I guess the LDS Church will give it to you for “free”, but “free” has a price too. The KJV bible is even more available and less expensive, the Gideons have an entire ministry devoted to giving away copies and they don’t “follow up”.

BUY a copy on Amazon? At the risk of sounding rude, I wouldn’t waste my money on it. Why should I when I can get it for free on the Mormons website?

I have many KJVs. I wanted theirs because I wanted to see if it was like the Protestant KJV or whether it was Joseph Smith’s version.

As for the Gideons, God love them, I have a copy of their Bible too.

Having been there, I know the routine. Unless and until you specifically ask to have your name removed from the records of the church (which they make as difficult as possible), they will haunt you. If a pair of Mormons show up at your door and you ask them politely never to come again, the bishop will just send a different pair of members with the hopes that they will be able to reach you. They are relentless. I’ve been on both sides of that table. Now that I am no longer a member of record, they don’t send any official representatives, but they find other ways to stay in touch, especially social media. I stopped using Facebook a few years ago for that reason.

They don’t know the meaning of respect and etiquette.

Because, like I pointed out, it really isn’t “free”, as you get on the list. Its about as free as a free vacation to Florida offered by timeshare peddlers.

If $5 on Amazon is too rich for your blood, read the BoM online for free. Alternatively go to a public library, or look for a free copy in your room at the Marriott next time you stay there. I’ve seen it there, Marriott was founded by a Mormon gentleman- I don’t know if they still place the BoM there- they did when I worked for a Marriott owned by a Jewish family

The first copy of the BoM I received wasn’t even requested by me. Even so, I had always wanted to read it. I gave it to my mother to read after the first page made me laugh so hard that I couldn’t get any further. Mama deemed it, well, you don’t want to know her exact words. But it was enough to make me go off of the Mormons whom I’d admired until then.

Many years later, I was told they’d changed it and followed the recommendation to get it solely for the purpose of refuting their claims since I was, at that time, involved in a discussion with Mormons on Amazon after seeing their teaching that Jesus and Satan were brothers on their website. I managed to read the book in its entirety and was appalled at everything I read. The thing that continued to appall me as it had when I received my first copy of the BoM was their claim that the BoM is “another testament of Jesus Christ.”

Mormons get riled when you criticize their reading materials, their church, their beliefs, etc. They will call you a liar to your face. They claim you hate them and their church when in reality, what you hate is the deception that they and so many others are under and promote.

Unfortunately, what they claim we do to them is the very same thing they do to us when they speak disparagingly of His true Church, which for me, anyway, is the Catholic Church.
