I become angry, defensive or whatever when corrected. Is there an appropriate way to deal with correction? How do you deal with correction from someone younger than you? My family is more logical type and perfectionistic. I see myself as a bit different, most sensitive and emotional. Sometimes it can get annoying dealing with their corrections, especially over things I consider minor. Leaving soap in the sponge. Forgetting to cover the pot. Saying the word “damn.” There are worse bad words. My family gets annoyed that I can not handle the truth. The way they say it sometimes it is too rough. I guess I feel like my family would be “perfect” without me. I feel like my father has to correct me the most constantly because I am forgetful and careless. My little sister rarely does anything wrong. She is very obedient. I am very transparent personality wise. My flaws are very evident and easily point out and correct. I HATE THIS. There is very little to complain about my sisters. I HATE BEING TOLD I SHOULD BE LIKE THEM.

It could be worse. You could be a logical person with an emotional family. That’s how I grew up.

It’s part of our fallen nature to chafe when being corrected by a legitimate authority. America has practically turned this into a religion.

But when we obey when it is easy, that is no credit to us. But when we obey a hard, annoying, but otherwise legitimate instruction given by a legitimate authority no matter how minor, we show that we love God more than self.

Rather than trying to control the emotion, control the response. “Yes Father.” “Yes Mother” said with humility and not a trace of contempt and immediately obeying the instruction will please your Heavenly Father.

This all depends on your age…If you are under 18, older people are experienced & can help you avoid getting hurt or in trouble. If a younger person is correcting you, it’s probably to make fun of you.
If you are over 60, it’s a slap in the face to be corrected by your children or even younger friends. :o

Is it possible to find a moment of calm to initiate a conversation where you can say, “When you say X, u feel Y, and I’m getting really frustrated and down on myself.”

Or, “Maybe it’s the stress of school or the adjustment new schedule, but I’m getting really sensitive to how we say things to each other. Can we come up with better ways to communicate?”

we are all annoying on some level. I would call a family meeting, maybe at dinner. Explain how you feel upset when everyone is criticizing you. Tell them, you would find it very helpful if they phrased their comments with the same politeness they would show a co worker. for example they could say…

“Cratus please wash out the sponge.” or “I would like it if you washed out the sponge.” or “I would appreciate you remembering to wash out the sponge.” or " it would be helpful if you…"

So your asking them to show you respect, and kindness, and in return you will work on being responsive to their requests, calmly, and politely. 🙂
strive to respond with a happy heart.
