Rest in Peace

May the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.

At what point will we be resting in peace? After death, those who are heaven-bound, will either spend time in Purgatory, or go straight to heaven to be with Christ, in the presence of His Saints and the angels… Right?

What does “rest in peace” mean?

I think that this resting “in peace” refers to the most fulfilling peace of God’s presence afforded by the beatific vision, which we experience only in Heaven. The prayer asks that the soul we are praying for may enjoy the peace of Heaven.
