How exactly does one make restitution for academic cheating? I can understand some of you might say we must own up to the school\college. But if this didnt happen would you think its unfair to hold onto your degree once you’ve graduated and work in a job that requires that qualification?

I ask this today because days ago I helped a friend on an assignment. While I did not write it up, I did give them several ideas to put in the essay. This apparently
is still considered plagarizm (collaboration is a form of cheating).
Now I wonder would it be unfair if my
friend worked in their field knowing they had cheated in some tasks?
Also, would I be liable for any of the restitution? Sorry if I seem scrupulous on this matter.

What makes you think that this is cheating? It looks like normal student collaboration to me, and I have never heard of an academic institution which bans all collaboration.

Giving someone several ideas to put into an essay, but not giving them the words to write, is not cheating because they will have to absorb and understand the ideas when they write them in their own words.

Similarly, for scientific work, if I explain to someone how to prove something, but only give them a fragment of the proof in writing, they will have to understand the whole before they can use that fragment in their own work.

Stupid I know. But technically they would be using an idea thats not theres and writing it up as their own. They wouldnt have cited where they got the idea from.

universities (I’m Australian too btw :)) call this plagarism or unauthorised collaboration.

You are in a better position to say that than me. Sorry for jumping in.

As for the original question, re. restitution, I don’t have much to say. I hope you get a useful response.

Edit. I will say that your concern does seem to be over zealous. IMO, you should only be concerned with the direct impact of your own collaboration, ie. giving some ideas in one assignment, rather than the whole issue of them graduating and then working in the field. Your concern would only apply if you significantly contributed to them cheating on a crucial work (eg. honours thesis), or repeated cheating throughout their course.

One more thought… 🙂

If you had legitimately helped them with one assignment (eg. answered a question, but not given an idea), would you then take credit for them graduating and becoming distinguished in their field? Of course not! Then, why give “credit” to one possibly illegitimate contribution in the same way way?

Just some perspective.

I guess you’re right. Sad thing is im aware of their past cheating (which was more dramatic than that) though I took no part in that at all! Thanks for your advice. I do overexaggerate some things haha
