What is the Catholic doctrine on restitution for sins? I realize Jesus redeemed us by atoning for our sins but I mean, even after going to confession and asking for God’s forgiveness, there remains the issue of restitution. For example, if I were to steal something, even if I went to confession I would feel a burden to restore what I stole. But other things aren’t as simple. What about, for example, a sin against chastity, taking the Lord’s name in vain, or any number of other sins for which restitution is not directly possible.
