Restore Christian Philosophy!

Dear Forum

I am taking an online Philosophy course as most of you know. I love Philosophy, it is like The mental version of Chess. Philosophy isn’t mediocre. Philosophy makes you dig deep and hard. Anyway, Right now, we have just started the second unit, Epistomology and my assingment is on “What is knowledge” and I have to form a Socratic Dialogue.

Anyhow, I thought I would donate a Papal encylical on The restoration of Christian Philosophy by His Holiness, Pope Leo the XII. If you read the encyclical, I think it mentions how we have to restore Philosophy in the culture, because otherwise the culture starts getting ideas and develops dangerous Philosophies such as Moral Relativism, which is subetly mentioned, or at least hinted at in the encylical, and other dangerous methods of thinking. I agree. Catholics have to reclaim Philosophy. Otherwise we get dangerous wacko ethicists, like Peter Sanger, who is like a modern day hitler.

@ Linus: Feser is sorely needed when it comes to Christian Philosophy. He really adds the extra dimension, that kick, to really make us think abstractly about how to defend Christianity - in particular Catholicism - and I’m absolutely grateful that he’s on “our” side. We need more believing philosophers.

Although not a Catholic, Roger Scruton is another person that I read when it comes to conservatism (UK conservatism). Roger Kimball is another when it comes to conservatism in the art world.
 
After reading Feser’s Aquinas get The Christian Philosophy Of St Thomas Aquinas by Etienne Gilson. It’s more difficult reading but is far more in depth (especially the existential aspects). I’ve been meaning to get his book The Spirit of Mediaeval Philosophy but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
 
This is a sign for me to continue reading Chesterton’s works. :3
 
I like Feser too. I’m re-reading his “Aquinas” now. On his blog, he periodically posts on what he calls 'the Scholastic bookshelf," a on-going list of good books for those interested in Thomistic thought. Some are highly advanced but he includes several titles that are more accessible, such as Daniel J. Sullivan’s “Introduction to Philosophy: The Perennial Principles of the Classic Realist Tradition.”

That is a very commendable call.

I believe the first step on that path would be explaining the reasons why the Catholic Church has lost its philosophical positions.

I have and have read several times " Elements of Christian Philosophy. " Don’t know if it is the same book as you cite, but it is excellent. On another point, Gilson had a long standing disagreement with certain philosophers such as Cardinal Mercier over Epistomolgy which I am having a hard time understanding. I think when you start analyzing the thought process you are wading in deep mud. 👍

Don’t get hung up on Epistomology. You know reality by reflecting on the information your senses receive from the things outside of you. Some how your intellect consolidates these into concepts representing the natures ( species ) you perceive. Then your intellect makes judgments on these concepts representing the real things outside of you. Like, " …Oh, yes that is a horse or No, it is not a horse, it is a cow…" These judgments are true or not true as long as you have judged correctly. Normal adults will judge correctly. So their knowledge is true, they know what they know is true. I don’t think any philosopher yet has got it right, including Aristotle and St. Thomas so it is best not to get carried away. How can anyone know what goes on inside our human nature - we can’t see it, we can’t touch or measure it directly.

St. Thomas gives as true a picture as we can get but I think he errors in trying to be too specific, too detailed. Whatever you do, don’t fall for any type if idealism. 👍

Only something that has lost its original quality needs to be restored. Analyzing the reasons/nature of the destruction/deterioration is a good start towards restoration.

That’s all I really meant.

I wanted to tell you that you can find Thomas’ Theory of Knowlage in the Summa Theologiae Part 1, Questions 84-89 (Human Intelligence). But you will have to read Part 1, Questions 75-83 ( Man), pay special attention to Question 75 ( Soul’s Nature). Article 1 of this question has a footnote in my Edition referring to Part 1, Question 18, Articles 1-2 (life). logicmuseum.com/authors/aquinas/Summa-index.htm 👍
