My parish struck what I think is a nice balance. We have a very large crucifix on the wall behind the altar and our processional cross is a crucifix as well. At the back of the church is a statue of the risen christ (without a cross so it doesn’t look like he’s floating).
When they put the new statue in our pastor wrote a note in the bulletin to explain the placement. Something along the lines of: the crucifix is placed at the front of the church and behind the altar so that we’re reminded of the sacrificial nature of the mass. The risen Christ is at the back of the church so that as we leave mass we are reminded of the life of the risen Christ that He shares with us in the Eucharist.
It’s also near the holy water fonts, so I suppose there’s a nice connection to baptism (sharing in Christ’s death and resurrection) as well.
