To whom did Jesus first appear after His resurrection?
Cephas? Mary Magdalene? Wondering.

Paul in I cor 15 gives a summary of the men or apostles, leaving the women out because the testimony of men were given more weight than that of women in his day. The gospels speak of women as the first to the grave – before sunrise. Mark 16 names Mary Magdalene as the first. Note: Mark’s ending does not appear in many of the better, older manuscripts and her seeing Jesus first must be based on oral tradition. So, if you see a conflict that I don’t see, it would be possible to dismiss the ending of Mark to slove the conflict.

Matthew 28:1
The Resurrection ] After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

Mark 16:2
Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb

Mark 16:9
When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.

Luke 24:1
The Resurrection ] On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

John 20:1
The Empty Tomb ] Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

John 20:19
Jesus Appears to His Disciples ] On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

I cor 15

3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

5And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

6After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

7After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

8And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

It would seem that Paul is simply talking about those (of the Church leadership) that saw Jesus.

In a society (ancient Greece) that did not put much emphasis on the role of women, it may not have been important that Mary Magdalene saw Jesus for she seemed not to have a role in the early Church ministry.

Of course, that’s just speculation on my part.

And, of course, the DaVinci Code cleared up the role she took in the early Church quite clearly, as well. 😛

Hi Daniel,

Without going into your argumentation, I would point out that although that passage may not have been in the original Mark, it is nevertheless considered by the Church as inspired.

Although nowhere found in scripture, I suspect He first appeared to His mother.
