Before Jesus raised certain people from the dead, what happened to them? Did they go to heaven or hell?

That’s an interesting question, Pete.

We know that before Christ’s death and resurrection that nobody went to heaven. They went to what is termed the “limbo of the fathers”. . .if they chose God. (If they chose ‘not God’, they still went to hell though.)

The thing about death is, once you die, you are ‘out of time’ so to speak.

Because God himself is ‘out of time.’ He CREATED time, therefore He can’t be “in” it. He is ‘outside’ of creation.

So when a person dies, he no longer experiences time. That’s why even though Lazarus was in the tomb for 4 TEMPORAL days, Lazarus might not have felt that he spent any time whatsoever. For Lazarus, he might have taken his last breath, and then instantaneously heard Jesus calling. . . his soul might have left his body for 4 days of ‘earth’ time but not even an instant of ‘eternity’. So he might not have been ‘anywhere’ or experienced anything.

One thing we can be sure of is that Lazarus did not pace around outside the pearly gates checking his sand-dial every few turns and muttering, “this is the longest 4 days I’ve ever spent. . .”

I’ve always wondered what happened to those Jesus raised from the dead. Did they die again? Had they died “before their time?”

God is not ‘outside’ of creation. Creation is within God. God is in everything He created.

As for the people Jesus raised, He raised them with the same corrupt mortal bodies. They would have died again eventually. Only He got a glorified body, and later on gave Mary a glorified body after she died. But Lazarus and the others never got a glorified body. They will at the end of time, but not 2000 years ago.

True.

When I get to Heaven, after time in Purgatory, of course, I want to ask those people what it felt like to die, and then die again. Maybe it was so much easier to face death the second time, because they would have some knowlege of the Salvation of Our Lord, and the glory to come.

If they were raised from the dead they went about their business in daily life. Lazarus we know had to hide because the Jewish leadership was out to get him.
they didn’t go anywhere until they died at some later time. Don’t understand the question. At that later time of their natural death they would be judged on their entire life as everyone else is.

These questions presuppose that time exists for those in such states. We think in terms of being sentenced for a crime, for example. But we know that time is meaningful only to the living and not the dead. We used to measure time in purgatory but the Church says that indulgences specifying an exact amount of time are not really meaningful. In my opinion, it’s the same situation here. Either that, or their judgement was suspended.
