Hiya,

I am interested in doing a Catholic private/individual retreat the last weekend of this May and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

I am interested in a retreat with a program or guided – or at least a retreat with a schedule of prayers, but not anything too “touchy-feely” (you know, something more spiritual and less of a “pop-motivational” type thing.) Preferably something within a few hours drive of Los Angeles.

For the record, the following either do not have available space for one reason or another on the weekend I am targeting or have no program listed:

St. Andrew’s Abbey (Vallerymo)
Serra Retreat (Malibu)
De Paul Evangelization Center (Montebello)
Mary and Joseph Retreat Center (Palos Verdes)
Holy Spirit Retreat Center (Encino)
(more to come to this list as I look)

Also, it looks like Prince of Peace Abbey and Mission San Luis Rey do not have any programs on the weekend I am looking at (May 25th) but they are my backups if anyone has any feedback on them.

Thank you!

I found one in Newberry Springs, California called “Holy Resurrection Monastery”… they are Byzantine Catholics. Below is a link to a page where you can either fill out the form to sechedule a visit with them or just call them at the telephone on that same page.

From the pics on the site it seems like a wonderful place! I wish I could go there myself. 😛

Here’s a quote from their site concerning guests to the monastery…
Hospitality is the logical extension of community life. Our aim is to receive every guest as well as we can, “for in such a way have many entertained angels unawares” (Heb. 13: 2). We try to offer a place of prayer and retreat for those who want it, together with Christian companionship, rest and food within the limits of our life and means.
I hope this is what you’re looking for and that you can schedule a visit with them on that particular weekend.

God bless

Many from my Parish - North Orange County - go to Prince of Peace. I have always heard good reports from them.

I haven’t been on the retreats, but did go to the abbot’s installation several years back. I was quite impressed with their facility.

We used to run weekends for couples at San Luis Rey many years ago with one of the priests there. It also seemed very good.

The shock is when you leave on Sunday afternoon. The mission makes you feel that you are miles from the world - a mile later you hit the freeway.

Thanks for these – looks like the Carmelite House has a married couples retreat that weekend. I had noticed the name of Povarello but since they don’t seem to have a web site I couldn’t get more info.

Thanks – good to hear the positive feedback–I am gravitating more and more toward Prince of Peace even if there is no guided retreat.
