I have an employee that is having martial issues. She and her husband can’t afford $100 an hour counseling. I am very reluctant to get involved with employee home domestic problems but I know she has two young children. I’d like to at least give her a place to go for help.

From reading other threads, I had seen Retrouvaille mentioned many times. I went to the Archdiocese of Baltimore website and found the link I needed to retrouvaille.org Used their group locater. That when I got my surprise. Apparently, Maryland has no programs. Alaska or North Dakota have programs. But the oldest Catholic area in the U.S. with the largest percentage of Catholics in the U.S. does not.:confused:

So my question is… does anyone know of any troubled marriage program available in the Baltimore area?

I also plan on asking my priest this weekend.

They may have to travel a state or two. It is worth it. Granted the 6 weeks of follow-up may be difficult.

I would drive to Virginia before I went to another local non-catholic program.

Don’t be reluctant to step in and help. My boss is the one that told my husband and I about Retrouvaille. He told us it saved his marriage and I know it saved ours. I am sorry that I can’t help with any info in your area but if somehow they could make it to one out of state it would be great.
 
A few more details…

I’ve never met her husband and I really don’t know that much about her. The only reason that I know about their situation is that she asked if our health insurance plan would cover counseling. I told her that there is coverage for mental health and drug counseling. That’s when she told be that it was for marital problems. I told her that she could call the insurance company and ask but that I was pretty sure that they would not cover marriage counseling.

I also asked where she went to church. She is Catholic. I told her that I thought there were some programs that may help. I thought I could just look up what I needed and pass it along to her. It’s not that easy.

I’d like to give her some help without getting into the middle of a marital dispute with a jealous paranoid husband. Also, I have no counseling experience. I’m an accountant.

When I said don’t to be reluctant to step in and help, I wasn’t very clear. Sorry…:o I meant not to be afraid to give her some resources such as Retrouvaille or something that the Diocese offers. I think you are wise not to get involved with the situation as it is. Maybe you could refer her to a counselor at her parish for some sort of program.
 
Is Retrouvaille exclusively for Catholics? We have family friends, 30 - 40 ish, call themselves Catholic but that is such a stretch. They were married by a jp. Neither been to church since their teen or pre teen years. Their marriage has been ripped apart by infidelity and they are so lost.

No it is not exclusively for Catholics. The weekend and follow ups I went on were not noticeably Catholic at all. In fact , I was a bit disappointed about it but. However, it is a good program . It does take commitment.
 
I found out yesterday from my dh’s veteran’s affair psychiatrist that we can get free marital counseling from the local university. He gave me the number to call. The counseling will be done by the University’s student’s in their last year or getting their PhD in Psychology. That could be another alternative for them if they really can’t afford to go to another state or afford counseling fees. Have them check out their local University and see if it has a psychology department.

Tell her to find a counsellor first and then ask if they accept her insurance plan.
