Returning to dust and resurrection

Obviously with it being ash wednesday I keep seeing posts on social media today advertising the fact that it is ash wednesday, and the words “you are dust and to dust you shall return” seems to be the most popular “saying” on these adverts. When I received the ashes today the words used were “repent and believe in the Gospel”
Anyway, what I was thinking about was those words “you are dust and to dust you shall return”, when we say the creed “look forward to the resurrection of the dead”, it sort of confuses my tiny mind.
Are we saying we will turn to dust? and then be re-born/created on the day of resurrection?
I keep thinking that although our bodies do eventually turn to dust, our spirits/souls never die, can’t die, only the flesh/bones turn to dust.

Of course none of us here have died and been resurrected yet, so we don’t know the whole complete truth of what may happen, I’d just appreciate your thoughts.

You are correct. Our flesh dies and becomes corrupt, but our soul is immortal. At the end of time our bodies will be resurrected, but in a glorified state, like Jesus. What all that entails we do not know, only what is given forth in Scripture.

“Man, thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return.” It does sound rather negative, but true nonetheless. It is addressed to “man” (all-inclusive, not just males, of course) and by ourselves we are indeed dust and shall return to same. Only through God’s great mercy are we anything but dust – so repent and believe the Good News because it is Good News indeed.
