About 3 months ago, my neighbor asked me to fix her computer. She dropped off her computer and the supplies that came with it off at my house and I then proceeded to fix it. It was at my house for a few days, and I saw that she had headphones with her original computer supplies that were unopened (standard earbud headphones). I took them out and then started to use the headphones, and when I returned the computer I did not return the headphones figuring that since she owned the computer for a year already, she never used the headphones anyways.
Just recently I found myself wondering about these headphones and how they are not mine. Thinking about the situation now, I took property of someone else without their designated permission. She never called back to inquire about the headphones, so she probably did not even notice they were gone. Nonetheless, I still feel bad about taking them in the first place. I do not know how to go about dealing with the headphones at this point. I am about 500 miles away now, so just casually returning them is out of the question. Even if I did say to her that I have the headphones, knowing her, she would probably say that she doesn’t care and I can keep them.
I have ceased using the headphones and put them away for now, for it would not feel right to continue to use them. What is the right thing to do at this point in time?
