I am wondering if any of you can give me the best answer to Protestant’s claims that Rev 22:18 is a proof statement for sola scriptura? (“I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.”)
On the face of it, it would be easy to buy that this passage supports sola scriptura. However, we know that when Revelations was authored, the canon of the Bible as we know it today did not yet exist. Rev 22:18, as far as I understand it, is simply addressing the prohecies given in the Book of Revelations. However, I know there are more and better explanations to overcome Protestant’s assertions that this is evidence for sola scriptura.
Can anyone please help me out on this one? I have a Presbyterian friend (and former Catholic) who has convinced himself based largely on this passage that the Church is a heresy and that we have distorted the pure teachings of the BIble. Of course, I know that he is not correct, but I want to be able to explain to him in a loving and brotherly manner why the Catholic Church is correct in it’s assertion that sola scriptura was never the way it was meant to be.
