Contemplating Spong and his works brings to mind Bentley’s reported reaction to Pope’s translation of THE ODYSSEY, “…a pretty poem, Mr. Pope. But you must not call it Homer”. The comeliness of Spong’s tenets are beyond me. But certainly, he must not call it Christianity. And, if he doesn’t, why, his sort of doubt is certainly wide spread enough; one can’t seriously chide him for no faith. What one resents is his lack of integrity in doing what he does, with a miter on his head. And, far, far more, one resents that the Episcopal Church is such that they allow him to speak thus, while wearing their purple.
