Revelation 12:1-6

I don’t see enough discussion on the Book of Revelation so I’d thought I’d start one I’m going to key in on the dragon to start with although there is obviously a lot more that can be gleaned from this passage.

The obvious answer is the that the dragon represents Satan, but there is much more to it.

why does the dragon have 7 heads and 7 diadems?

These represent the 7 Herodian Kings between the time of Jesus’ birth and 70A.D when Jerusalem was destroyed:

-Herod Archelaus (23 BC–c. AD 18), ethnarch of Samaria, Judea, and Idumea
-Herod Antipas (20 BC–c. AD 40), tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea, who (called “Herod the -Tetrarch” or “Herod” in the New Testament up to Acts 4:27) was described therein as ordering John the Baptist’s death and as mocking Jesus
-Herod II (c. 27 BC - 33 AD), sometimes called Herod Philip I, father of Salome
-Philip the Tetrarch (4 BC–AD 34), sometimes called Herod Philip II, tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis
-Herod Agrippa I (c. 10 BC–AD 44), client king of Judaea, called “King Herod” or “Herod” in Acts 12 of the New Testament
-Herod of Chalcis, also known as Herod III, king of Chalcis (AD 41–48)
-Herod Agrippa II (AD 27–100), tetrarch of Chalcis who was described in Acts of the Apostles as “King Agrippa” before whom Paul of Tarsus defended himself

why does the dragon have 10 horns?

the 10 horns represent authority as well as the 10 Roman emperors between the time of Jesus’ birth and 70A.D:

-Augustus
-Tiberius
-Caligula
-Claudius
-Nero
-Galba
-Otho
-Vitellius
-Vespasian
-Titus (led the Roman armies that destroyed Jerusalem)

why is the dragon red?

Herod was an Edomite. Edom means red.

The Book of Revelation is a very complex book on many levels . . . literal, spiritual and alleghorical . . . and we as God’s children are very much encouraged to read it and absorb the details . . . however . . . understanding it is something else entirely . . .

Ver. 1. **A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet. By this woman, interpreters commonly understand the Church of Christ, shining with the light of faith, under the protection of the sun of justice, Jesus Christ. The moon, the Church, hath all changeable things of this world under her feet, the affections of the faithful being raised above them all. — A woman: the Church of God. It may also, by allusion, be applied to our blessed Lady[the Virgin Mary]. The Church is clothed with the sun, that is, with Christ: she hath the moon, that is, the changeable things of the world, under her feet; and the twelve stars with which she is crowned, are the twelve apostles: she is in labour and pain, whilst she brings forth her children, and Christ in them, in the midst of afflictions and persecutions.
