Hi, what would be the best way to explain this to someone who insists that Catholics “add to scripture”, or whatever, or what would be the best way to explain this passage in general?

It applies to the Book of Revelation-but they extend it to include all of scripture-sloppy exegesis to support their agenda.

Jesus, our Lords peace be whit You.
What it means? It means what it says. Why,oh why must there always be someone who thinks there is a “hidden” message in The Bible? There is nothing that is something else then what there is printed. Think like this,I tell You “God bless You” and Your first thought is “hmm, what did he mean whit that?” Ansver,I just told You “God bless You”,and nothing moore, nothing less. Same whit the Bible. What God don’t want us to know is not in the Bible, remember thay Jesus did explain what He ment to the 12. If there should have been something “secret” it would not have ended up in The Bible. Having said that, there is very likely things Jesus told the 12 apostels that did NOT end up in the Bible for all to read. I read the Bible every singel day,one chapter each day, from the first letter in the O.T to the last in the N.T and then I start all over again, and not once have I came across anything I can’t figure out whit common sence. The most importen thing is to know the Bible, for that is the Book of The Church, whitout the Bible, there would not bee any Catholic Church, actually,no churches at all. So the next time You find a interesting thing use common sence, and read some moore,or pick up the Catechism. And finaly, believe me,there is nothing secret in the Bible, nor The Catholic Church. What we know is what we need to know. One day we will know all the ansvers, right now we don’t even know all the questions.

Simplest way is to point out that Protestants subtracted from scripture.

You could ask them what would have been meant by ‘Scripture’.

In 2 Timothy 3:16, we are told that scripture is useful…but we have to remember that the ‘scripture’ that was being spoken of would have been the Hebrew Scripture or Old Testament. If that had never been added to, we would not be reading the Gospels or any other part of the New TEstament.

Exploring the development of the Canon of Scripture is critical. It did not exist as a Bible as we know it, until after Christ’s death. Well after. So what was being spoken of in Revelation?

Rev. 18 “I warn every one who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if any one adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if any one takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.”

Friend, I simply do not see where these verses say or even imply that the CC adds or deletes from the Bible.

It is however HISTORICAL FACT that the Protestant Bible has SEVEN ENTIRE BOOKS missing as well as numerious changes to various text.

Further the very LARGE number of Protestant denominations is a DIRECT result of personal interpetation; also forbidden by the bible.

** 2nd. Peter Chapter One verse 20-21/B] “First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy [meaning understanding] ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. “

2 Peter 3: 14 –17 "Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Eph. 4: 18 “they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart;”

Col. 1: 21 “And you, who once were estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him, provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.”

Rom.10: 17 “So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ”.

And here we see clearly that the office of translation of the Bible resides within th Only Church founded by Jesus; His Catholic Church…

1Tim.3: 15 “if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, [Singular the CC] which is the church of the living God, [Singular the CC] the pillar and bulwark of the truth” [Singular the CC]**

Right. Note that the Sadducees thought that everythng after Deuteronomy was an illicit addition.

Note Deuteronomy 4:2
2* You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it; that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you

Because it is Catholic dogma. Look up Quadriga.

Christ was hidden in the OT. Now that we know Christ, we can see him there.

“this book” cannot refer to anything beyond the “book” of Revelation - the canon of New Testament doesn’t take place for another 300 years, and the “book” as we think of it hasn’t yet been invented.

Furthermore, Catholics didn’t “add” anything to the Scripture, Protestants subtracted things from the Old Testament - writings had been included in Scripture at the time of Jesus and had been rejected by the same people who rejected the New Testament, for the same reasons.

Ask the questioner how they know which books belong in the Bible, and which do not?

Catholics didn’t add anything to the book of Revelation.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that John is talking about Revelations, the book he is writing when he makes the statement “this book”.

18 For I testify to every one that heareth the words of the prophecy of** this book**: If any man shall add to these things, God shall add unto him the plagues written in this book.

19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from these things which are written in this book.
