What is the Catholic view of Revelations? How are we to approach it? Is it just symbolic? Are we living in the end times now? Was St. John just writing about the Romann emporer of the time? I need help talking with my protestant friends when it comes to the rapture, are Catholics rapturists?

No, we aren’t, at least not as popularly portrayed. 🙂

These articles should help (one link is to a radio show discussing this):

For a thorough presentation from a Catholic on “the rapture”, read The Rapture Trap by Paul Thigpen.

here I often wonder and ponder as to whether John was writing and/or dictating all this in his seeming state of trance whilst having or getting these revelations - twinc

If you mean like what happened to Peter in Acts 10.10 ‘trance/Gk-ekstasy’, no, at least the text of Rev doesn’t indicate that John went into a state of ekstasy/trance. But it does say eg Rv 1:10, that he went into ‘the spirit’. The two could be related ie, going into a trance and going into the spirit, but I don’t think (opinion) that they are the exact same thing.

I have written a commentary on Revelation from a Catholic persepective that is deeply rooted in the Early Church Fathers and later medieval Catholic commentators, as well as guided by the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Here is my commentary litteralchristianlibrary.wetpaint.com/page/Commentary+on+Revelation+by+John+Litteral

There is not an official position on the book of Revelation as far as how it should be interpreted, but there are some principles that most Catholics follow concerning the end times. But as for interpeting the book of Revelation there are some common approaches that vary among Catholic intepreters, such as some approach it literally, such as myself. That is not to say that I do not recognize the symbolic language because I do, and the book is full of symbolism, but I understand the book to be talking about specific things and not speaking in broad generalizations. Some approach it as being made up of broad generalizations. Then you have the different positions among interpreters concerning whether the book is about the past, present, or future. Some claim that everything in the book has already been fulfilled, or that everything in the book is to be applied to every age of the Church, and some claim that it is a book about the future. Personally I believe most of it concerns the future, though there are portions that concerns things that have already happened, such as the Incarnation found in chapter 12, the warnings and praises to the 7 churches in Asia, first 6 seals, etc.

I think (opinion) that he wrote it from memory, after he came out of the spirit.
I don’t think he was writing during the visions of the beasts, angels, plagues, turmpets etc.

But with respect to the messages to the 7 churches, I can’t tell if he was dictating the 7 messages while in the spirit or writing them out from memory afterward under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (how does being ‘in the spirit’ relate to being under inspiration of Holy Spirit?? same/diff?) If from memory, then he had a pretty good memory.

harder question than I thought 🙂

I think that Jesus promised that the Spirit would perfect the Scripture Writers’ memories:
26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 14:26
