For years Hollywood has dished out morally toxic garbage and now it looks as if the viewing public may finally be gagging. Hollywood is bemoaning how bad the boxoffice is doing this summer, and now luke-warm advanced reviews of Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” looks like it will not be this year’s savior of the film industry after all. “Batman” and “Bewitched” ain’t breaking any records either.

They called Mel Gibson every name in the book before they had even seen “The Passion of the Christ,” then it surprised secular Hollywood and the critics by cleaning up at the box office. Hollywood decided to ignore it completely when it came time to give out the awards and they gave the Oscar to “Million Dollar Baby,” a culture-of-death film.

I can’t help but think that maybe Hollywood’s current slump might be due to some devine retribution.

Cant wait to see Million Dollar Baby that despite me knowing how it ends I will make my OWN judgements of the charactors mental state and her mentors conflicted decision as to what to do. I dont agree with the outcome, but I will not judge how its played out til I see it. I aint gonna demonize the film as an ad for “culture of death”… Despite what the outcome was, I dont buy into people accusing the movie of this… reality check…people DO decide to commit suicide and I am interested in how this particular situation plays out.

As for War of the Worlds…who are all these critics… how many. The ones I read as well as the incoming reviews are highly positive. I think you’re gonna eat your words about the box office take of War of the Worlds when all is said and done…especially by next Monday when the first weekend totals come in. My family…heck…even my MOTHER who is in her 60s is going along! She hasnt been to the show since Bram Stokers Dracula in 1994! She is STOKED and we all are to see WOTW! 👍

Bewitched was a very fun lite hearted comedy and shows signs of having slow but steady legs at the B.O

Batman Begins has already been greenlighted for a sequel… in just two weeks its pulled in over $130 Million Dollars. DOMESTIC…Worlwide it stands at over $214 million. Its already made back its budget and turned a profit in just 2 weeks out.

You seem to have avoided Star Wars “Sith” over $300 million DOMESTIC… The stats show the reason the MAJORITY of people have slowed going to movies have not been (primarily) due to lack of “good” movies…but:
  1. The rising costs of tickets and high concesssion prices
  2. Dvds coming out very fast (in some instances within 3 - 4 months of a theatrical release) Many people are simply creating home theaters (like myself) in order to avoid stupid people and their unruly children at the show…as well as high prices. The numbers for Batman, Sith, Hitch, Mr & Mrs Smith, Madagascar, etc… show that people DO come out for the “event type films” as well as for family fare such as The Incredibles and drop their cash. In a business where there is gonna be good and bad films, I think overall 2005 is shaping up to be a good year for me. (I dont judge a flicks worthiness on box office take btw)

Mr & Mrs Smith… have all been good times at the show. A movie really has to spark my interest to get me to go cause quite simply, I am one of those polled who stays home NOT due to bad flicks but I have a SWEET Home Theater set-up.

The Fantastic Four is gonna ROCK and more than likely do great box office

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory looks cool

King Kong is gonna sizzle the box office as well

As for family fare there have been:

Robots
Because of Winn Dixie
Madagascar
The Pacifier
Poohs Huffalump Movie
Racing Stripes
Sahara

So…whats the complaint?

True the studios are griping…but they also dont reveal that what they lose at the Box Office they are more than making up for it with Dvd sales…its evening out… its simply a matter of economics and God has nothing to do with it.

I dont buy into the “divine retribution” bunk at all. It just sounds like somebody once again trying to accuse the “evil hollywood” of ALWAYS pandering to the lowest common denominator… Sorry.
 
While I’m not ready to assign divine retribution for Hollywood’s lackluster appeal at the box office, I will say that The Passion decisively blew everything else out of the water.

Hollywood has seen a slump for some time now, and it is because most of its offerings are morally bankrupt, filled with mindless violence/sex, and downright dull with PCism–especially so-called “historical” films.

People want a straightforward story about real emotions, virtues upheld, and good triumphing over evil–like The Passion or Lord of the Rings. We are all sick to death of the constant drumbeat of downer subject matter with no redeeming value. And a few happy-slappy children’s movies or supposed blockbusters can’t make up for all of that.
 
The last movie I actually saw in a theater was The Passion.

Before that, Saving Private Ryan.

Before that, Titanic.

I guess that pretty well illustrates how often I go to the movies. 🙂

It just isn’t worth it, to be frank. The tickets are too expensive; I haven’t bought anything from the highway robbery concessions stand since about 1980 or so, and they crank the sound up so loud anymore that it hurts my ears. I’m just getting too old and curmudgeonly, I guess.

Besides, when you get to be an old guy like me, you like to be able to pause the movie and run to the john every so often.

That’s why I favor videos at home. 😉
 
The last movies I have seen in the theater are:

    *]The Passion (4 times)
    *]LOTR Movies (all three)

    Before that, the last two movies I saw in the theaters was in 1992 and 1983. Most movies I have no desire to see in the theater. I will wait until they are on cable. That way I can turn them off if I so not like them and I will not have wasted my money for a ticket.

  1. I really wanted to see the Therese movie, but it wasn’t offered in my area…too few Catholics I suppose…is it out on DVD? I didn’t even see it advertised around here…

  1. I saw them in theaters too… and last went when Therese came out… there is nothing good to watch anyway!

“War of the Worlds” is a box-office dud. So far it’s made only $165 million at the domestic boxoffice. The movie, however, cost $182 million. Take $40 million off the top for Cruise and director Steven Spielberg.Then split the remainder in half, because the record 3,900 screens on which the movie is playing get 50 percent of the take.That leaves $67.5 million with which the studio can now pay bills. The bottom line is still $120 million away. That would have been all right if War had had a bigger first weekend and more momentum now. But “Fantastic Four” has put a nail in its coffin. Come Friday, both “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Wedding Crashers” will come like steamrollers over “War.” The result is going to be bloody, with “War” likely to do less than $15 million and finish fourth.
 
I dunno, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” kind of scares me. Johnny Depp looks way too much like Michael Jackson to be inviting children to his place.:bigyikes:
 
I heard that the 20 week boxoffice slump ended this weekend with the debut of The Fantastic Four.
However, I believe a new slump could be starting again.

BUT the movie about the March of the Penguins is really cleaning up in the boxoffice for an Independent Film which was simple recorded on 35mm film! I could like to see this one…but when it comes out on DVD.

Yet, that is what many people are doing in general…waiting for films go to DVD.
 
I actually broke down and went to see War of the Worlds. The only reason I went was because I heard the tripod special effects were worth it… and they were! I love H.G. Wells’ original novel and so I had to see the tripods in action. I was not disappointed. They are so very close to Wells’ original vision. However, the rest of the movie was hardly worth the celluloid it’s printed on.

I got the feeling that Spielberg has made so many movies that he’s become jaded. His direction is formulaic and predictable and I doubt that he will ever be able to surpass his former glory.

I was stunned by Tom Cruise’s performance… stunned at how wooden it was. He’s deader in this movie than he was in Eyes Wide Shut. I got the feeling if his face was in shadow the entire film and his identity hid the film would have been no different.

Tim Robbins makes and appearance looking gray and bloated. I got the feeling he’s only in this film because he’s a hardship case, his political big mouth having sunk his career beyond repair.

Great special effects, great sound effects… but where’s the story? Buried deep in H.G. Wells’ wonderful novel. I look forward to Jeff Wayne’s animated version of WotW coming in 2008 which will be true to the original novel:

Funny that out of everywhere I have been on the net and heard on tv… this is the only place calling WOTW a “dud” 😛

When all is said and done and everyone is paid and the film hits dvd, the total profits are expected to be at $100 million. Not bad for a movie that was shot in only 90 days with 3 extra months of post production… show me a CEO who would sneeze at making 100 million profit in under ONE YEAR. :rolleyes:

And as far as Cruises acting…I think we seen 2 different movies cause he was phenomenal in his acting.

Political big mouth? Ah…BIAS creeps into the review… :rolleyes:

WOTW was a great movie.

I’m so glad to hear someone besides me feels like that. Depp just looks, well, “jacksoneque” and waaaaaay too freaky. :eek:

Of course, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is one of my favorite movies, and I guess I figure if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

In all fairness, Passion was not eligible for Best Motion Picture.
 
Hollywood funds Norman Lear’s “People for the America Way”. PFAW is as pro-abortion as NARAL but has an added twist–it tries to keep traditional Christians out of all elected and appointed offices. Also joins in with those who, fairly sucessfully, driven religion out of the public square.

I don’t see the point in supporting in any way those who detest everything I’m about. Besides, movies are shallow and transitory. It is tragic that, instead of referring to books all generations read to illustrate a point, many refer to scenes from movies. Saw an example the other day on TV. On a political show, an allusion was made to “Ratso Rizzo”. Wow, I thought, that dates her. Wonder how many other people even knew what she was talking about.
