When it comes to reverence before God, and with the use of blessed objects, what are some general principles, say, that could be said?

I tend to be a bit excessive, or rather, misconstrueing certain acts or ommissions are possibly being irreverent, when in fact they are not. This is what I think. I mean, here are some e.g.'s of some of my doubts:

(1) Praying with no shoes/socks on
(2) Praying with footwear on, but worry over whether or not they be sufficiently clean, i.e.: worry over the possibility there may be some (albeit minute) excrement on them.
(3) When attempting to pray in latin, worry (in this case I think more reasonable!) over not pronouncing the words properly - my latin cannot be considered advanced, i.e.I haven’t really learnt the basic conventions entirely.

1 + 2 I believe display tendencies of scrupulosity.

Comment on this, if you please, and on any principles you may use when it comes to acting prudently when it comes to reverence…

Prayer in and of itself is reverent. God does not care if you have socks and shoes on. Most of the world would be excluded from prayer if such were the case. And dirty shoes? No shoes, if worn, are clean. I think that you are being VERY scrupulous here. Pray in a language that you are comfortable with. If Latin is not your native tongue then why force it? God understands the human heart without judging the particular language that we speak.

While reverence is important, I feel that it’s better to make every moment a prayer than to find those “special” pious times when you must feel worthy to pray. God loves to hear from me whether I am in my construction clothes covered in dirt or my Sunday best. And thanks be to God for that!! teachccd

1. Some monks have done this for years.
2. Some monks have also done this for years.

Also, no socks were common in the 20s AD along with dirty footwear.

With regard to the latin, I do not normally pray in latin; I suppose, ocassionally, I like to have a go to say a certain prayer in latin, such as the Confiteor, for instance.

I say don’t worry!

Praying should be as natural as breathing, it is to be that intimate to your life, so pray constantly in all you do with shoes on or without shoes on, in excellent latin or in poor latin, pray as you can, don’t take your ‘self’ seriously and stop worrying!

You might like to go and talk to your Priest about these repetitive thoughts you are having. The Priest will be able to help you with this.

Pray, persevere in prayer but don’t worry about it.

Personally, I pray in my pajamas, in the shower, while doing chores (no clean footwear then)!, while taking a walk, driving in the car, etc. Just pray when the Spirit moves you, and don’t worry about clothing, etc.
