I am a protestant in search of Truth. I have been able to glean a great deal of help from many of you in the forums. I am excited and hungry for God, and I want you all to know how grateful I am for your help.

Is it ok for me to pray the rosary before I have come into the fullness of the Church?

I have one now, and would like to wear it around my neck to remind me to pray at several points in the day. Is this ok, as far as Church dogma is concerned?

I apologize 😊 for my ignorance of proper terminology in the query.

It is absolutely okay to pray the Rosary before fully coming into the Church. Have at it 😃

As to wearing it, you’ll get some argument on this point, because in some areas wearing a Rosary is a gang sign. However, your reason for wearing the beads is honorable, so I don’t see anything wrong with it.

It would be a great thing for you to pray the rosary now. As far as wearing one, they shouldn’t be worn like jewelry, but underneath your shirt as one would wear a religious medal or the military would wear a dog tag should be fine. Fr. Hannigan (a military chaplain) would relate that many soldiers in Iraq would wear the rosaries we would send underneath their uniform. Padre Pio called the rosary his ‘weapon’ against the evil one.
If you have EWTN on cable, watch Marcus Grodi’s program The Journey Home. He interviews people who have converted, and as you listen to their journey it can help you learn the faith. .

Welcome Home! You certainly may pray the rosary, but, while it is not forbidden, Catholics usually do not wear it. You can carry it with you in your pocket or car to remind you to pray; my husband bought a pocket rosary that he attached to his key chain, it’s small and convient to use.

Nuns wear (or used to wear) the rosary. Mother Angelica wears a rosary on her show. The idea is to wear the rosary as a sacramental and not as jewelry or worse as Madonna would do.

But still legal I presume?

:tiphat: Welcome. So happy to have you here. My advice to you on both questions would be a resounding YES!! If you’re starting to feel an urge to pray the Rosary, then that it the prompting of the Holy Spirit in your soul. I’m a convert and t he Holy Spirit prompted me to begin praying the Rosary before I was received into the Church.

As for wearing your Rosary, it is perfectly okay to do so as long as your motives are pure. I would encourage you to wear it under your clothing while at work, but you could wear it outside your clothing while at Church in a spirit of reverence and gratitude.:gopray2:

I have worn my Rosary outside my clothing around my neck only at Church in an attitude of reverence. In fact the Rosary I have from a Catholic company states in the Authenticity Card that it was made in such a way that people could wear it if they choose. The company’s name is Loffredo Brothers.

Hope this helps. It’s great to know that this forum has been helpful to you on your faith journey. I will pray for you.:blessyou:

What a lovely prayer the Rosary. Pray it often. As for wearing it, i keep mine in my pocket and under my pillow at night.

Can i ask a question?

I dont know all the mysteries so usually offer up the rosary for family / dead but just pray the prayers without noting the mysteries as i dont know them all. I know a couple. Is this ok to do?

The Rosary is my favorite way of praying. God bless you for wanting to say it.

There is no dogma regarding the Rosary. It is a private devotion.
Yes you may pray the Rosary even though you are not (yet) a Catholic.

Excellent! You and the others in the forum are appreciated by this fellow!

Ask Jesus’ mother to pray along with you. Jesus gave her to you as your spiritual Mother while He was on the cross.

Not necessarily wrong, but it can be, potentially, problematic.

In Pope John Paul II’s encyclical on the Rosary, Rosarium Virgins Mariae, PJP, II, sites Pope Paul VI:

"…without contepmplation, the Rosary is a body without a soul, and its recitation runs the ristk of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas, in violation of the admonition of Christ: "in praying do not heap up empoty phrase as teh Gendiles do; for they think they will be heard for their many words’ (Mt 6:7).

The beauty, value, and efficacy of the Rosary, is in contemplating the mysteries, for they are what make the Rosary, Cristocentric (i.e.–centered on, and geared towards, Christ).

Of note: the stucture of the Rosary–comprised of 150 HM’s–is based on the 150 Psalms. Prior to the Rosary, the more common practice was to recite the Psalms, over and over again (Psalter). The Rosary (while not displacing this practice) overtook it in popularity–due to its Cristocentricity, which is lacking in the recitation of the Psalms (since they were in the OT, and therefore before Christ).

I strongly suggest reading Pope John Paul II’s encyclical on the Rosary–Rosarium Virgins Mariae–to anyone interested in the Rosary, as it explains the Cristocentricty of the Rosary well. Read that, and you’ll understand how the Rosary brings us closer to Christ–and better appreciate the old addage: ‘to Christ, through Mary.’

Here is the link to it:

here is a teaser excerpt from :
19. Of the many mysteries of Christ’s life, only a few are indicated by the Rosary in the form that has become generally established with the seal of the Church’s approval. The selection was determined by the origin of the prayer, which was based on the number 150, the number of the Psalms in the Psalter].
I believe, however, that to bring out fully the Christological depth of the Rosary it would be suitable to make an addition to the traditional pattern which, while left to the freedom of individuals and communities, could broaden it to include the mysteries of Christ’s public ministry between his Baptism and his Passion. In the course of those mysteries we contemplate important aspects of the person of Christ as the definitive revelation of God. Declared the beloved Son of the Father at the Baptism in the Jordan, Christ is the one who announces the coming of the Kingdom, bears witness to it in his works and proclaims its demands.** It is during the years of his public ministry that the mystery of Christ is most evidently a mystery of light: “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (Jn 9:5).**
Consequently, **for the Rosary to become more fully a “compendium of the Gospel”, it is fitting to add, following reflection on the Incarnation and the hidden life of Christ (the joyful mysteries) and before focusing on the sufferings of his Passion (the sorrowful mysteries) and the triumph of his Resurrection (the glorious mysteries), a meditation on certain particularly significant moments in his public ministry (the mysteries of light). **This addition of these new mysteries, without prejudice to any essential aspect of the prayer’s traditional format, is meant to give it fresh life and to enkindle renewed interest in the Rosary’s place within Christian spirituality as a true doorway to the depths of the Heart of Christ, ocean of joy and of light, of suffering and of glory.

No, there is nothing wrong with praying the Rosary that way. Try to learn the mysteries and then you can announce the mysteries as well as offer your prayer intentions. It is better to pray it the way you are doing it than not to pray it at all just because you don’t know all the mysteries. Just keep praying it! & when you are able, use a guide to also pray the mysteries. There are little books you can get to help you. You may also find it helpful to get one of those CD’s where they pray the Rosary and announce the mysteries. I am a convert and I used to listen to that and pray with it in the car when I was driving. That’s how I learned the Rosary. You will be surprised at how soon you realize that you do know them all. God bless you! 😉

No concerns about ‘mechanical repitition of formulas’, or Christ’s admonition in Mt 6:7 (as I expressed in my post, immediately before yours?)

Hello…in regards to your question about not knowing/remembering the mysteries…if you have a smartphone, download “Rosary Player”. The app allows you to choose the correct set of mysteries for the day and provides a short meditation on each mystery before beginning the decade. The short meditations have given me new things to think about while I meditate on each mystery. Hope it helps you too! 🙂

Not got a smart phone. I know the sorrowful mystery so usually think of that when saying the rosary.

The Joyful Mysteries:
  1. The Annunciation
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth. And coming to Mary, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” (Lk 1:26-28)
  2. The Visitation
Mary set out and traveled to the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” (Lk 1:39-45)
  3. The Birth of Our Lord
And Mary gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger . . . And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Lk 2:1-20)
  4. The Presentation in the Temple
Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Temple to present him to the Lord. At the temple Simeon and Anna came forward, gave thanks to God and spoke about Jesus to all who were present. (Lk 2:22-38)
  5. The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple
The boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. (Lk 2:41-50)
