Not big at all, I never heard of it till you posted it here. However you did get my attention so i watched the movie. Its one part commentary on the excessive commercialism of Christmas, sweatshops, and marketing to children (I agreed with that), one part funny songs, and one part making fun of Christians of all sorts including Catholics, Protestants and Mormons.
Since 1996 our project has expanded from a one-man performance artist preaching against consumerism on the sidewalks of Times Square to a 35-person choir and 7-person band with dozens of original songs, a critically acclaimed stage show, a major motion picture and multiple media platforms. We have demonstrated commitment to educating the public about the consequences of unsustainable consumption. Our message–consuming less–is the single most effective and immediate response an individual can take to imeediately halting the climate crisis. This same messaage has reached millions of people and has contributed to the public’s increasing awareness of the relationship between shopping and climate change. Besides our long-term commitment to promoting sustainable consumption, our organization’s efforts to revitalize public space and defend the first amendment have been documented all over the world.
So yeah about 50 people.

Some quotes from the movie:

" GIVE US SOME POWER TO…STOP SHOPPING! "
“We are being CONSUMED at Christmas time!”
“We have to take Starbucks into our bodies, it has come to our neighborhoods like space aliens. Is it our lover?”
a prayer is addressed to "the mother father God that is not a product "
“Oh Victoria! We know your secret!”
“Mickey Mouse is the anti-Christ!”
“the devil! Mickey Mouse!”
(Guy throwing them out of Disneyland) “Its not like on US public land where you are just free to … Sing”
“what was Christmas like before the shopping started?”

There is a scene where they try to do an exorcism on a walmart sign,
Scenes in a confessional… one where the girl tells about having to cut a dress off of herself while shopping, and the “reverend” says her fabulous body rejected the dress.
🤷

I think it’s a joke.

If it isn’t, then he’s just another nutbag preaching lies.

i was just looking through some movies to watch
and i came across this -
apple.com/trailers/independent/whatwouldjesusbuy/
so just curiously - how big is this in the US?? and is there only goal to stop ‘christmas materialism.’
its quite amusing…lol
I think its supposed to be a parody? Somewhat Land Over Baptist style? However, i have watched a DVD on Christian Fundamentalism in the U.S - where a Fundamentalist family burnt an effigy of Santa Claus on their front yard whilst their neighbours looked on in horror.

The reverand Billy is indeed a satirist, court jester, a voice calling out to us to take a look at ourselves and our obsession as a culture with mass consumptiona and buying of things we don,t need! can I here an AMEN brothers and sisters!

haha…so you’ve seen him live??
lolz…i just found this too be soo random. and i thought they would have a way bigger congregation than just 50 people when referring to number people in the church as said by another poster.

hold up! im just reading now from here

that
''he says that Reverend Billy is not a parody of a preacher, but a real preacher;(ok, isnt that a little peculiar) he describes his church’s spiritual message as “put the Odd back in God.”
then further stating -
‘The Church of Stop Shopping is a non-profit organization’
so meaning that his church is a fake?? and it is not a church at all but a society or club or something of the sort??

I think just about nearly any poster (just about) could pop a sign in the window, call it a bible study/worship center, and you would at LEAST get 50 people in a matter of weeks. You wouldn’t need to show anyone anything more than a bible, and you are suddenly qualifyed to lead something like this.

thats strange…one poster claimed that the church has a billion people and the other 50 people…
lolz…strange…what a large difference

No, I said the Church of Keep Shopping has a billion members (if not more), many of them in America.

The 50 or so members of the Church of Stop Shopping are trying to convince the many more members of the Church of Keep Shopping to stop being so materialistic and consumerist, especially around Christmas.

Rev. Billy may not be officially ordained by any recognized church, but he sees himself as a real, bona fide, preacher of the Good News of Non-Consumerism.
