Reverent Novus Ordo Masses in San Diego

Does anyone know of any parishes in San Diego where the Novus Ordo Mass is celebrated closer to what was intended by Sancrosanctum Concilium? For example, Latin is used in the unchangable parts of the Mass, Gregorian Chant, etc. Maybe even celebrated ad orientum?

I have been alternating between my current N.O. parish and the Tridentine at Holy Cross but was also looking for reverent Novus Ordo Mass. Any suggestions?
 
My favorites:

St. John the Evangelist in University Heights
(the 10:30 am Mass is great!)

St. Mary’s in Escondido has a very solid new pastor. You can’t go wrong up there

St. Louise de Marilac in Crest

There is one for San Francisco and one for LA.

I for one would like to see Columbus. Although I already know that tacky is the norm here. I have in the past considered starting a site that reviews masses in the diocese. But I really couldn’t stomach quite a few of the parishes around here.

I’d like to see this as well. I have probably been to a half dozen masses in the diocese of Cleveland in 4 or 5 different parishes. And in each of these parishes no one (except me and those with me) knelt for the consecration. It is horrible.

I think I remember once before hearing that the 10:30 Mass there is great.

A couple questions…

Is it celebrated Ad Orientum?

Is there hand-holding during the Our Father?

I’ve heard St. Albert the Great in North Royalton is good.
I shudder to think about the rest.

If I remember correctly they have one at Our Lady of the Rosary in Little Italy once a month on the second Sunday at 4:00pm It also has Gregorian Chant… It is said to be very nice. I’ve heard that St. John the Evangelist is pretty good as well and their Pastor is also the Pastor of the Traditional Mass out at Holy Cross. Masses at St. Josephs Cathedral tend to be pretty good as well, fast, but pretty good, and they offer confessions prior to almost every Mass. Often it is the Auxiliary Bishop himself who hears them, which to me is just short of remarkable.🙂

As an aside, I don’t know where he is now, somewhere in the North County, Escondido maybe, but Father Fernando Ramirez is outstanding:thumbsup: 👍 He was at St Charles down in the South Bay but transferred up north in September or so. The South Bays loss is definitely North Countys gain.

Are you planning on attending the midnight Traditional Christmas Mass? Some people who don’t attend the indult every week, like me, are unaware that they will have midnight Mass this year but it will be at St. John the Evangelist. Father Neely is going to be there.👍

Yes, my family and I are planning on attending the Traditional Christmas Mass. I am really looking forward to it.
 
I was in San Diego for the first time this past summer (Canadian resident) I asked, at the forums, which Catholic Church I should attend and ended up going to a Church about five minutes from the bay, it was really really good, the Priest was pounding on the pulpit really giving it too us about sin! I was really quite shocked, in a good way. I went to confession later in the week at this Church and had the same priest, boy did he give it to me, a real tune up.
Its kinda hard to explain, I mean he really laid it all out even raising his voice (no… no one could here us) yet at the same time was sooo loving a charitable, it is something that I will never forget, it was truly, for me anyways, a very refreshing and welcomed experience.

Wow, I found the website you mentioned very neat! A group of us are doing the same thing in the Diocese of Toledo - eventually we will go to every Parish in the Diocese (134 churches). Looks like we aren’t the only ones checking out various Parishes and seeing what their liturgies are like.

Will you be going to Cleveland next?

Are you concentrating on listing innovations? That is one of the things I noticed from the SD site. About a year into it, they stopped listing things like Handholding and Orans for the Our Father.

Why the heck not!!! Heard there are some excellent Parishes out in the Diocese of Cleveland and would love to visit them.

Within the group, we have a “journal” on the various Parishes with our “gripes”. I’m really trying to keep things on a positive note on the site…well, at least I hope that is what it looks like. We are trying to incorporate the things we see that we know would make our liturgy better, as well as staying in line with what the Church teaches. We’re hoping that this becomes a stepping off point to more and better things in our Parish.

I’m finding that right now in our group’s spiritual lives, this is working out to be the perfect time to do this. One of the group is a high school senior, two of the group are young adults (one is also a recent RCIA “graduate”), and myself, I’m pushing 30 and really exploring my options in the next few years of my spiritual life. I’m going through my lay ministry classes and am finding that the classes, in addition to the church visits, are really enhancing my spiritual life in ways I never thought possible.
