Reversal of vasectomy vs. adoption

I’ve heard it suggested that reversal of one’s vasectomy is the only thing that will “undo”, along with confession, the sin of having the vasectomy in the first place.

:hmmm: I’m not sure I agree with that, but :newidea: wouldn’t adoption be preferable to attempting to reverse the vasectomy? Yes, I know this is a “moral equivalency” question, but I thought it’d be an interesting discussion.
 
The Church does not require one to have a reversal once a person has a vasectomy. True contrition within the Sacrament of Reconciliation suffices for the remission of this sin. (And it may not be a mortal sin if at the time one does not meet the three requirements)

Being that my wife is adopted, I am in great favor of adoption and would know that that would be a very noble thing to do even for one who has not had this procedure. The reversal of a vasectomy has been suggested as a way of making restitution by some but since there is no guarantee and the cost, the Church does not require it.

So, in closing, I do not feel that there is a this verses that when it comes to knowing what’s right. Go with your heart and know that you are forgiven after Sacramental Confession no matter what…God Bless…teachccd

I would say that what you heard is in error. Christ’s mercy is not contingent. Once confessed, the sin is destroyed and forgotten by Christ for all eternity. In the scenario described, failing to do the reversal would mean that there was a string attached to His forgiveness.

Adoption is a great option. I’m not sure its any better or worse than doing the reversal. Too many variables in that equation.
 
I think you are mistaken. I have heard it brought up, and the correct position given.

Adoption is a beautiful option.
 
Um, no, I am not mistaken.

Whoever took that position was adamant about it; I would not have given it a second thought if they had stated it as an error and corrected it. 🤷

While your hearing might be quite intact, that position was incorrect. Neither a reversal nor adoption (while this is an excellent display of love) is necessary as part of the remission of this sin. Trust me on this one… teachccd

As much as I enjoy their program…they’re not an infallible source of teaching. They, like all of us including yours truly, sometimes just gets it wrong.

What I do have a high degree of confidence in is that I can support my position pretty readily with the CCC, sacred scripture, and sacred Tradition.
