My family was born and raised in the Catholic Church and i myself am a revert. 5 years ago, my sister converted to Islam and now she wishes to come back to the Church. This may sound like a dumb question but does she have to get baptized into the Church again?

For the record a conversion to Islam is very informal. It takes two minutes and all you have to do is say a few sentences and you are part of the religion.

No, she does not have to get baptized again. This is because once you are baptized, it puts an irremovable “seal of Christ” on the soul of the person being baptized. In short, once a Catholic, always a Catholic; even if that person leaves the faith to another or abandons belief in God altogether. That said, your sister may need to go to Confession to confess her sins. She can then resume celebrating Mass as usual.

Thank you,
Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk

I would also add that she should speak with a priest outside of Confession. She should know her Catholic faith better this time so that she becomes better grounded in the faith.

Was she ever given Confirmation? If not, she will probably have to go to RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). That is why the meeting with a priest is important.

And tell her “Welcome Back!”

Wonderfull news; can i suggest that she sees a spiritual councillor regarding the issues that led her to leave so that the can be clearly resolved and understood to prevent any temptation to return to Islam. Maybe also her experiences may be usefull in our work at keeping our flock and encouraging others to return.

love and respect

Thanks all for your help much appreciated!

God bless!
