Are there any former Catholics on the forum that left the Church, became Presbyterian, and then returned to Catholicism? I am meeting one of those soon (still a Presbyterian) and would like any thoughts you might provide. My initial plan is to give him a copy of Rome Sweet Home.

ask him why he left?

btw I am not Presbyterian nor have I returned to Roman Catholicism

Great book! I left the Church for a few months and then started my journey back, but I never was an official part of any other denomination. Most importantly be kind toward them and help them gain a proper understanding on what the Catholic Church teaches. I’m sure that sounds obvious but its the most helpful advice I can think of now.

Thanks to you and Lookaround. I have several questions in mind and because he is a friend of a friend it will be a very relaxed discussion. God’s Peace

I’m a revert from the Church of Christ after wondering in the desert for 17 years. My wife converted with me, before me in fact. I was still considering Orthodoxy. Alexander Campbell created the “church of Christ” denomination. Don’t ever tell them they’re a denomination. They’ll flip their lid. It is important that they read the ancient church fathers.

pull up St. Ignatius of Antioch and have him read it. Quote it if you can. The document I’m speaking about is Ignatius to the Smyrneans. check the spelling. But he wrote this on his way to Rome to be martyred. He was a bishop and served under the feet of the apostles from what I understand. More over the other patristic fathers also confirm what he says in this document. Ignatius used the term KATHOLIKOS, meaning Catholic. He said that where there is the bishop there is the catholic church. He also called those that do not believe that the bread and wine are the real body and blood of Christ are heretics and to stay away from them. If you haven’t read it Google “ancient christian documents” and have fun on the first link. That’s the site I read beginning with the Didache. The more ancient Christian documents I read the more I realized the problem.

Another topic is “where did we get the bible”. It didn’t fall out of the sky. Does he know that the first KJV contained the so call Aprocrypha? The ancient church in the Eastern and Western Church still have them today. Why were these quoted in the New Testament? Also where does the bible say that it is the sole pillar and foundation of truth? The bible never says that. Look it up again. 1 Timothy 3:15 It says that the church is. Ironically Read 2 Timothy 3:15 and see what it says. Remember that the reference is from when he was a child, before the New Testament came into existence. The reformation is fundamentally flawed on the premise of solo scriptura much like the theory of evolution is flawed based on we can explain everything without God. This takes some thinking. But it makes a whole lot of sense once you grasp it.

Be kind and charitable. Will be praying for you.

Thanks for your ideas. I found a very informative article on the link above and plan to use some of Luther’s own words! God’s Peace
very good idea. REmember that Luther added the word “ONLY” next to the word “faith”. If you read the history of what he believed he was very Catholic. The next generation of Lutherans were the ones that really split the split wider.

I am a revert who spent 20 years in Baptist churches. I did spent some time among Calvinistic Baptists as I relate in my reversion testimony.

I wouldn’t use anything from that link guys. MHFM is a sede vacantist cult led by the Dimond brothers and are essentially as anti-Catholic as any n-C bunch you will ever find. In fact, I think any promotion of their stuff is a banned topic here on CAF. 🤷
